i will be towing 8k 5th wheel, do i need to use tow/haul on flat ground or mainly when pulling hills.. i have towed trailer without using tow/haul and have had no problems at all.. does driving in tow/haul affect your mileage... i used to have a dodge with a cummins and you just put it in gear and go....

The tow/haul switch will let the tranny know to lock the torque converter in every gear when it shifts, to prevent slippage, unlike when your not using tow/haul, it only locks it in 5th gear.

I use Tow/Haul evertime I tow my trailer, I think the Transmission functions better when used while towing, just my opinon.

You will see a decrease in fuel mileage. I always engage mine when towing my camper. I figure a little fuel beats replacing a tranny.

I would say that anytime you're in a situation where down-shifting is likely to occur, you're better off in tow haul.
Like lightnin said, it locks up the TC in the lower gears which reduces RPM's in the those gears for any given speed, and I expect this would actually save some fuel. It also cuts down dramatically on the heat gain in the transmission, so whole cooling system will be less loaded.
It does upshift at slightly higher RPM's so sometimes I'll vary my speed a bit to get into the lower end of the next gear if I can.

x2 here. The manual says it's not necessary when towing under 9000lbs but I would still use it to help reduce slipping. MPG may suffer a little but tranny will thank you.

I always use mine with a trailer or when I have over 1000 lbs in the bed. My unloaded weight is already above 7000 lbs because of the ARE Topper and other junk I keep in the truck. I notice the tranny runs cooler when the TH is engagd. Plus it sounds wicked mean with my 5" straight pipe, the LLY's VGT whistles like a C-17 taking off.
thanks for the info...........

I have been getting about 1 to 1.5 mpg better towing 3000 lbs in tow/haul vs. towing the same trailer in normal mode. Plus, the improved shifting just makes for easier towing.
