I stopped by my local Allison dealer to pick up some spin on filters today... the shop manager was telling me that when I remove the filter, I should crank the truck and let it run in park to purge the fluid in the converter. I asked should I be worried about the trans running dry, he said no.

Is there any rhyme or reason to this procedure? I change my spin on every 10k and I've never lost any fluid except what was in the filter and the little bit that drained. Do these come from the factory (2005) with TranSynd? If so, shouldn't I try to hang on to it rather than dumping it every 10k and replacing with conventional Dexron III?

Also, I am considering draining/replacing the fluid (I'm at 30k) per the maintenance schedule on this site. But, there again, I wonder if mine was factory filled with TranSynd and should I hang on to it for a while.

Let the truck idle with no spin-on on and see how well that works for you :D

No, just kidding...I dont think its a very smart idea at all to run with no spin on. At the rate the allison filter pumps, it could empty the pan very fast.

but I could be wrong...wait for Mike L to answer this one..

I am opposed to that idea. Doing that should limp the Alli and set A and B trim solenoid codes. If you do this have a Tech 2 handy to clear the codes.

Probably wants you to get upset and say "F" this and pay him to change your spin on.

Your 05 does not have Transynd in it. It came with DexIII in it.

Good answers. DEWFPO, that makes me feel better about flushing and refilling with Dexron III. BigBadAllis - I thought along the same lines... except he wanted me to bring my truck back after I burned up the trans after running it dry! :)

Mike - Say I had access to a TechII... would it even be worth doing the "flush" idea? What about EFILive, would that reset the codes? This was at a Allison dealer, so maybe the guy is thinking of the larger Allison transmissions...

Ben, the way he explained it, it seemed as if the filter supply is plumbed from the converter, so it would empty the converter first before the pan... I have no idea...
