My 95 is at the steeler's, they say the stepper motor is the problem and have a used one? Can it be changed without the pump being done also. $130 for used $230 for new? What ticks me off about this is the truck never had a code before the head gaskets were done but immediately after getting the truck back i had code 34 and they won't pay to fix it!!!! Grrrrr...

It's externally mounted, so I would guess they could switch it with the spider off.

Very,Very unlikely the motor is at fault. It trips this code when the pump can,t get within 5 degrees of the desired amount. Could be the advance is sticking or something else is wrong with the pump. See if the little rod coming off the stepper motor is moving while running.

Hmmm... well the wife had them change the stepper motor with the used one, no more code and appears to be running fine. Is it possible they just had the timingout of wack creating the problem to begin with and the old stepper is fine? Any way to check the stepper or rebuild it seeing's i have an extra one now?

Can anyone answer the above questions?

Also the truck was a very hard start when cold, now with the used stepper installed its starting just fine, not plugged in and around -8 C last night.

Is it possible, I'd say its most likely the case, stepper motor failures are very rare, and often misdiagnosed. Improvement in startability is the result of the timing change, not the new stepper motor. Only way to check it is on another pump in a truck or on a test stand. I'd say 99.9% chance your old one is fine, just for the sake of argument, is it the old style (metallic/yellow finish) or new style (black)?
Oh, and you probably won't have any luck rebuilding it, I've never heard tale of anyone doing it, much less reassembling it, its just too common and reliable a part to mess with.

Not sure on the style but will probably have a look at it later tonight, i will let you know.
Thanks for the input TDG.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif
