: Help, death wobble on my 03 Duramax!

I have developed a bad wobble in the front end of truck in the past 2 days. I could barely tell anything was wrong until I put a trailer on the truck. Then I was unable to go over 30mph and hit any small bump without it wanting to throw the truck off of the road. It just shakes violently left and right.
I jacked up the front right tire and I can move it about 4 inches before the other side even tries to turn. The entire steering setup moves front to back also. What is so tore up. Any input is appreciated.

Man, you better fix that ASAP, you probably need idler & pitman arm and maybe even tie rods with that much slack, Be Careful if you have to drive it.

With that much wheel and tire, I'd pry replace the front steering and suspension.

Death wobble is classic front hub/bearing -especially on an '03. It's not going to get better, it's dangerous and it's beating up your tie rods and arms until you get it changed out.

UNSAFE!!!! I agree with everyone, check the steering linkage and wheelbearings before your wheel falls off or someone gets hurt. You change your own oil on the ground or is the service center you going to not checking your truck while its in the air?

x4 on the wheel bearing. With your setup, though, I'd look at ALL the steering components -- idler, pittman and tie rods. Running huge tires on huge rims with tall lift will wear out front end parts very very quickly. If you didnt install braces and sleeves when you did the lift, you should do yourself a favor and get it done.

I absolutly agree with everything that you guys are saying. I know the lift, tires and wheels tore it up, I am just new to the IFS stuff, I have just never had to work on them.
It is not being driven until it is fixed.
What is the bar that ties the tierods together? There is a lot of play between that and the mount on the passenger side. Does that make sense?

Side to side is steering, Up and down is the wheel bearings. This is trying to wobble it at the tires.

If i had to guess without actaully being there to wobble the tire myself i would say you need a pitman and idler arm.

Idler arm is messed up. Its not that bad a thing to replace.

Still...have a mechanic check out all the steering pieces. When the idler arm goes bad, theres a good chance the pittman (on the steering box) will be bad, too. Also, check those wheel bearings like the previous posters said.

That sucks... I have been there on my truck more than twice.

I would jack it up under the control arm on each side and start with the wheels. Check the wheel bearings, the upper (fabtech kits ship with pos uppers) ball joints, then check the lower ball joints, then look at the idler, pitman and tie rods. While you are in there you may also want to inspect the steering box, sometimes they get screwed up too.

I wouldn't be surprised if you have more than one thing going bad, I would just spend 20 or 30 minutes going through everything piece by piece to not overlook anything.
