What's the difference between the single rear wheel 3500 rated at 9,900 GVW and the 2500HD rated at 9200 GVW? Mac

I sold a 2500 and have a new 05 3500. From what I can tell:

1. 3500 has 265 tires on steel rims; 2500 has 245 tires on alloys

2. 3500 has slightly heavier rear springs

3. 3500 has no side body moulding.

4. Insignias, of course.

My 2500 was an 02. 05 rides better in stock form than 02 did. Yes, I know, that doesn't make sense, but that's what my lumbar region tells me.

Same here, my 3500 SRW is riding great, I'm glade I went with it instead of the 2500-HD, I knew about it coming with the steel wheels so it could handle the extra weight, but I was a little surprised when I saw that it didn't come with body side molding, but then again I sort of like the no molding look.

I have a 2500HD now that I use for work, (phcc contractor), that is close to the 9200GVW and I'd like to make some changes to get the GVW up some. I can handle a tire/rim change and an extra leaf if that's all it takes. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif I'll have to research this some more...

on edit: Does anyone know if the Allison trans has changable speedometer gears like my 700r4, or does the ecm have to be reflashed by the dealer?Edited by: mac1234

Have to change the speedo in the pcm, can the dealer do it? Probably yes, will they? Don't know?

The dealer will probably refer you to a local speedo-shop. Here in Portland/Vancouver there are three dealers who all refered me to other private shops. I'm sure they can do it, but they are probably worried about changing the stock settings, they don't like to do that. I ended up just buying a Hypertech ProgrammerIII and doing it myself, picked up some power to boot!

As always, ratings are done by the manufacturer and cannot be changed.

That aside, putting 265 E Bridgestone Dualer (and others) bumps you from 3048 to 3400 per tire which is same as 3500. Air bags will give you adjustable spring enhancement. Adding leaves will make you stiffer too.

Programming for tire change is aftermarket.

See my sig. I haul a heavy goose and running 80# in the tires along with 65# in the bags makes things quite stable.

The 3500 has the overload springs in the rear with the extra contact points on the side of the frame. Plus the wheel/tire difference and the body molding delete. Other than that about the same.

You can get steel wheels on a 2500 HD; I ordered mine that way. The
difference is the tires, and only the tires.

You just cannot order any aluminum wheels on a 3500.

Other differences are the spring pack, stickers, and some restrictions, like
no short beds.

One poster investigated the 4WD aspects. Apparently the 3500 has a
different transfercase than the 2500HD, the same one as on the dually
4WD.

When GM decides to offer the 3500SRW in a short bed I will order one. I
can have a local bodyshop add the body moldings. I just don't want an 8'
bed crew cab for my every day driver.

Would have ordered a 3500 if were offered in a standard bed.
