: Brake controller problem

For some reason I cannot get my brake controller to work on my boat trailer. The lights work, but there is no electric brake actuation. I took a multi meter and instead of getting a constant 12 volts I get a weird voltage fluctuation with brake pedal pressed or not. Not modulation of the electric brake whatsoever. The trailer manufacturer said that they are having issues with the new chevys. Whats the deal?????

(2007 2500 duramax)

Thanks,
Brett

you might have a smashed wire on your trailer. is the 12 volt reading from the truck connector? they dealership hooked up my father-in laws brake controller on his 07 new body style 1/2 ton, and it(the box) does not work either, he'll have to bring it back. maybe the wiring is different than the old body stlyes .

Did you hook up the power wire under the hood?

No problems with my horse trailer, had nothing at first, but after trying again the little plug was not pushed in far enough in the adapter,.

Maybe someone can confirm, you can not get a :normal: reading with the volt meter on a in dash brake controller, this is what I was told, the guys that installed the plug inside my bed could not get any type of reading so I was pleasantly surprised when everything worked perfectly.

What is the name of the manufacturer for your boat trailer brake system?
, Is it electric over Hydraulic type?

Like he said there is a power wire under the hood that you have to hook up yourself even if the truck came with the factory installed trailer brake

I am faced with the same issue...everything is working but no brakes ....so...I trust you all that I need to hook up this mystery wire....where is it and where does it go? How did you find out about this issue solution?

There is one thread, I think it is called "What is it?" or something like that, I would really like to know if this is the solution, if mine needed hooking up the guys who installed the gooseneck did it. A search for"break controller" might work.

It has some info about it in your manuel that came with the truck. It is on page 487 its not a lot of detailed info but that is how i figured it out when i was hooking up my electrical for my fifth wheel. The wire is taped on the right side (if your faceing the front of the truck with the hood up) by the fender. Hope this helps good luck!

The constant hot wire (1 o'clock position on the trailer plug) is not hooked up by chevy? Why, I dont know? Aslo the mistery wire is taped up next to the battery or fuse box on the drivers side. Pull the cover off the fuse box and the is a small bolt and nut in front of the box near the bottom that is hot and you put that wire on it so you have power to your brake controler.

I scanned the instructions the dealer faxed to me. Maybe this will help with guys with the new 07s as there is no longer a pigtail harness. Edit: I will copy off the other link as my scan didn't upload.
Subject: Information on Electric Trailer Brake Controller Wiring - Towing, Tow #06-08-45-008 - (10/10/2006)

2007 GMC Sierra, Yukon, Yukon Denali, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali XL

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some customers may have questions on how to connect an electric trailer brake controller or where the brake controller pigtail harness is located.

Starting with the new 2007 GMT900 full size utilities and pickups, there is no longer an electric trailer brake controller pigtail harness.

The trailer brake controller wiring is now part of the Instrument panel wiring harness and the blunt cut wires are located under the left instrument panel, behind the data link connector. There are four blunt cut wires in this harness as described below.

Wire Color
Circuit #
Description

Red/Black
242
12 Volt power supply (30A stud #2)

Dark Blue
47
Trailer brake output voltage

White
22
Ground

Light Blue
6311
Stop light input

The Red/Black circuit 242 must be connected to stud #2 of the 30 Amp fuse of the UBEC. This wire is located between the left fender and the UBEC (1). Refer to Trailer Connector/Provision Schematic in SI for document information on the trailer brake control-- Domestic.

I had a picture, but it wasn't real clear anyway.
