I am going to put a toolbox (or boxes) in my GMC. I am also thinking eventually I might want to put a gooseneck hitch in the bed also, probably a hid-a-way ball type system. I would probably primarily pull gooseneck flatbed equipment hauling trailers, no RV's or anything with a large, wide flat front.
I am trying to decide what toolboxes to put in the truck....I really want to put a pair of side-mount toolboxes on the truck that run down the top of the rails. They would not be full length, most likely stopping above the wheelwells (43" RKI boxes).
I was also thinking about a crossbed box.
What would be the best?

Make sure they don't go over the rails. Depending on the trailer you will be towing...they might get in the way!

I'll agree with GG. The side boxes could easely get scraped off. I think that you you have a shortbox? ....... Get a tool box that you like, just not real wide. Anything you put back there will take some acclamation. I'd go as big as ya can. The only time the toolbox will bother is, when your looking close behind.... when you're hooking up.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley26.gif

Yeah, the ones I am talking about sit on top of the rails. Some people call them "L" boxes. They definately stick up above the rails. heck they sit on top of them.
Similar to these:

So ya'll think that they would be pretty much incompatible with a gooseneck?
Burner, I assume you are talking about a crossbed-style toobox?
(and yeah, I do have a shortbed)

If you're looking at the WeatherGuard stuff....... look at the 121 (I think). I have the 117 or 111, the big box.... and it's too big for useing the Goose. I can hook-up to the goose....... but the first *slight* incline will crush the crossbed big style toolbox. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif

I am not really looking at the weatherguard stuff (nothing against them, they make great stuff). I was just using that pic as an example.
I will probably go with RKI. I've got their big crossbed box and a headache rack from them and like them a lot.
How did you reinforce your rails to hold that box? Isn't it pretty heavy?
Is your truck a long or short bed?

03 CC SB 4x4. The box weighs 105 lbs empty....probably about 450 loaded. I place 3/8ths natural rubber between the box and rails, no dents yet.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

Dang, you have no sort of reinforcement with that kind of weight and haven't had the cracked rail problem?
Apparently they might have made them a little stouter in the 02-up trucks?
