iv talked to too many people that has had their 6.5 throw a rod or break a crank and was wonderin how much a new block would cost if mine ever does it. i read one post where QM said " ur only a short block and 2 days labor away from fixin it" and we can do all the labor ourselves so iwas wonderin the price of parts

A rebuilt longblock is about $3000 at The Diesel Depot in Georgia.

You can get a reman block for as little as $2000, but you would be taking a risk. Even so, for $2000 you get a one year unlimited mileage warranty, so if anything does go wrong, you can get a new one. The place I am thinking of does not come highly recommended. In fact, I was told to stay a way. But then again, some customers also told me that the engine they bought from there was running fine for now. Email me if you want the name of the place.

How about this question: preventing yourself from having to need a new engine? Correct me if I'm wrong here, the Harmonic balancer is the key to keeping the crankshaft from snappin'.

Quite a few members at other sites speak very highly of these folks for 6.2 & 6.5 parts http://www.avantsalvage.com/ they have a separate business just for Diesels Jaime Avant runs the Diesel shop 478-552-9510, I have a request for quote on a block will post it when I get it.

Peninsular Diesel http://www.peninsulardiesel.com/parts.htm is another vendor with a good reputation offers a short block, complete without heads intake, running gear etc $2800, don't know if they sell just blocks.Edited by: Turbine Doc

Geez-o-flip, I almost forgot about that. At 147k mi, never been done. Can someone refresh what to look for, like engine movement when idling or where to put a cheater bar and place to your ear to listen for certain sounds?

I may be doing it soon for preventative reasons, but wish to assess the health right now . . . Thanks.

AVANT Salvage says no blocks to be had AM General isn't releasing any new ones, & they aren't selling bare blocks saving them for short & long block assemblies, did say steer clear of 97-99 blocks, either you have a good one or a bad one, nothing to prevent them from going bad, for a 18:1 300 Hp engine they will only use pre 97 blocks, too risky in their view to try for that much HP with the later blocks.

Bob call Jaimie Avant he probably has some good input

Hmm, I thought 97-up were desirable because of the piston oil spray valleys.

Not sure logic on 97+ blocks, saw it once on another forum also something to do with oil cooling fixed one proble but created another, I'll do some digging if I find it again will post the why 97+ is least desired, or maybe someone else will hit it before I find it again.
