: Mud in the new GMC commercial

Well the new GMC commercial pretty much describes how I use my trucks!

The mud I sometimes see is 2-3' deep. Sometimes the mud is so crazy I gotta have a Massey tractor with over 225 Hp and 10' tires pull me out.

Only differences would be 12-18000lb trailer hooked up to the truck pulling through 3 foot deep mud.

Thats why I got a 15000lb winch and carry over 50' grade 80 chain, 30'X4" tow strap, 10'X4" tree saver strap, Snatch block, multiple clevis shackles, and more. All equipment rated for over 24000lb usage!

I should make the new GMC commercials. Maybe they could follow me around with a camera crewhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

You will not pull any trailer like that through 3 feet of mud
with a P/U no matter how equipped, you are stretching it here BIG
TIME. Years ago I saw a 3/4 ton pick frame badly bent from towing
it out of a field with a grain trailer attached to it and pulled out
(with relative ease) by a 90 HP tractor (JD 4020). It was a fifthwheel
goose neck and it bent the neck a bit and bent the track frame a lot
where hitch attached. Trailer had gotten stuck and wieght was about 18
to 20K and after it was all sorted out and repaired they limited
trailer to about 12 to 14 k for soft field work. (My wife grew up on a farm)

Fingers....Hard to take pics at 3000rpms with mud flying and only one shot to get where you wanna go....I'll try to figure out how to mount camera. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

Snowman...your are correct....I spend 2 months at the end of the season fixing stuff and 2 months before the season gettin my equipment ready.

This summer I bent my fisher plow mount on the 2003 because I had a clevis hook in the mount (useing it as a tow hook). Luckily it only moved about a cm. I also broke the trailer hitch on my 20' trailer...had to weld on a new one.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif

You should make/fab a tow bar the will attach to both front mounts
on truck. I would if I has in your situtation. (I use Fisher plows too)

2-3' of mud?? Heck my 01 HD got stuck on a lake bed. How do you guys manage to get through more than a foot of mud?? Truck floated on the front end and couldn't get any traction.

The wife and I laugh at that new commercial...no f'ing way... there is probably concrete at the bottom for traction or somethin.

4X4Man; kinda neat. Where was that taken?

I was ashamed of my truck getting stuck in soggy grass. Only sank
a few inches, but....... Had to get the inlaws neighbour to pull
the truck out, the trailer out, then the truck and trailer out.
With an International tractor.

Heavy Duty 4X4. HMPH!

Gradyghost......you done playing in the mud for the season?

These trucks are so heavy that unless you have wide tires on (my opinion) you ah go ah nowhere, in mud.

Maxowner, pic was taken up at Blue Mesa Lake outside of Gunnison Colorado. I thought it would be neat to have a pic of my truck on the lake bed where we would normally be wakeboarding. Lake was nearly 80 feet down in 02. Cost me $450 to get out of that jam...two jeeps air'd their tires down and winched me out. Here's some more pics of the fun....

So your saying the jeep guys charged you? Unless you call a professional tow service people charging for pull outs http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif me off, never charged anyone even if they were idiots about it.

With the tires and power these things have I'd be afraid of 4wheeling my dmax right now, much better tires would be a must.

Yes, the jeep guys charged me. I had been digging for nearly 8 hours. I knew all those guys were taking advantage of us, but we had no other choice. The ranger was pretty cool when she came to visit after about 3 hours of digging, she told us we had 24 hours to get the truck out before she would be forced to give us a ticket. Oh well, learned my lesson, these trucks are not offroaders (in stock form) certainly not like that commercial protrays... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley18.gif

You guys don't think the duramax goes through mud?

I disagree. I have taken mine through some crazy mud. Sometimes my trailers will sit in mud for 3 days on a jobsite then I gotta go and get em. SO I drive through the mud to get to them then back up and hook em up!

The fun begins when the trailer is hooked up then the duramax goes no where unless I drive it hard.

Is it wise to mud in a 01 or newer D/A 4x4 maybe w/ some 900's or Q's?

SheriffBufordT

M.O. doesn't know how to drive if he cannot handle the mud, it is not the motor. It is the momentum and trail sense, most accomplished off-road motorcycle riders know this sense, eh. Take off you hoser!

Max Owner
11-10-2004, 03:02 PM
How will momentum help you, when you are maneuvering around? Where I got stuck, started out as soft grass.

???

P.S. The over all weight of the truck is a factor, I beleive for
the conditions I was in. Too heavy for size of tires. My
old truck was lighter and had bigger tires on it, in the same (pretty
well) conditions.

i must say i have been in the mud a few times with my d-max. to say how deep it was i cant but lets put it this way. i was asked to jump start a truck at a local mud run. i agreed knowing that i would probly get stuck. i wasnt in the accual hole i was in the one right after where they show off.

when i pulled in my front end went down i instantly needed 4wd. i pulled right put the the burban and opend my door. the mud was 4 inchs from the door. this is not water.i left my door open. after we got the burban going the mud was at the door. the truck sunk 4 inchs with in 5 min.

i still got stock tires.

after rocking back and forth for a few minutes it finally poped out of the whole and i finished going threw the mud.

i was just as shocked as the hand full of people watching me that i got out.

i think these trucks do very well in the mud considering their disadvantages.

I've only gotten this new truck stuck once in soft plowed ground that wasn't supposed to have water running on it. My track when I pulled the truck out with the 8100 were only about a foot deep because the truck was sitting on the frame and rear end. Other than that I have gotten through some deep mud with it and not had any problems...

Duallyvette
12-12-2004, 11:16 PM
I was towing my 4500lb brush chipper into a field to chip some trees. The front axle JUMPED down into the soft ground. Wouldn't move an inch. I called my employee to bring the single cab D/A. I had to unhook the chipper and pull it out backwards, then the truck. The truck is great plowing snow, but the mud in the commercial has to be watered down and on a paved road underneath. The commercial will do wonders for the towing business. GradyGhost must have better mud than I have.

mgmack
12-13-2004, 08:24 PM
I took mine out in 9" loose dry sand at Fort Fisher in NC and got it buried to the axles. I have the stock all terrain tires on it. In 4 LO it just churned the tires and dug deeper. I finally aired the tires down to about 35 lbs and it creeped right out no problem. But the extreme weight of the truck is a disadvantage in sloppy terrain with such skinny (245's) tires.

I'm considering moving up to 285's but am concerned with the gearing issues.
