Hi,

I have a 2004.5 LLY 4x4 short-bed with 15,000 miles on it. When it came from the factory, it did not have power folding mirrors. My dealer put them on and then put the truck on the lot where I bought it. However, the mirrors will not fold. My dealer told me about the problem and he stated it like this:

From 2001 to 2003, you could take a new chevy and add the power folding mirrors and they would plug into the wire harness just fine. They would fold and adjust. Mine adjust, but won't fold. The dealer told me it would take thousands of $ to replace the wire harness and we struck a deal. He knocked off some bucks and told me he would get me some non-folding mirrors and stick them on. I didn't really think I'd need the mirrors so okay, no problem. However, I've been driving the truck and I'd really like to have the mirrors fold. Question is, could I install a switch that would make the mirrors fold? Is that possible? Am I being told the truth about the wire harness.

Thanks In advance for help.

Do they have signals in them? if so, do they work?
Are they heated? If so, does that work?

If you answered yes, most likely your truck came with power
extending mirrors (You can also check your window sticker to find
out what mirors your truck had.) and the solution is simple....find a
dealership that knows what the hell they're doing and have them
reprogamit for folding mirrors. Other than that, unless it's a base
model everything sould be there.

It's just a simple re-flash.

I removed the folding mirrors in favor of the power camper. They did not work correctly when I picked up the truck, and the tech just told me that they won't interface..

I went back to search out the problem, which I also thought electrical, but a "smart and informed" tech overheard me, stepped in and fixed the problem.

Now, they work perfectly.

If they are the power-folding OEM mirrors (aka Full Featured Mirrors ...power, LED turn signals, puddle light, heated, power-fold) and the truck is wired for power mirrors (you have L/R mirror select switches, and the large 4-way rocker that adjusts them) all the dealer has to do is re-program "each" door module with the 'DL3' code using a Tech II. The GM OEM tow/camper mirrors will also work, the only difference is the door modules must be programmed with the 'DPF' code. When one goes "from" the power-folding mirrors to tow-camper mirrors you give up the power-fold option as the tow/camper mirrors are "manual" fold. Now if the truck came with manual mirrors that's another story.

Man, am I confused. The truck has the mirrors with the led turn signals (which work) and are supposed to be power fold. I'm not sure if they are heated ( I live in Texas) and I'm not sure if they have a puddle light, but I'll check tomorrow. If I supplied the vin, would that help. Thanks to everyone for all their help. Edited by: crghill

To my knowledge the "Full featured" mirrors are the only mirrors with the power-fold option. These mirrors were introduced in 2003 and 99.9% sure there were no power folding mirrors available prior to 2003. I could be wrong, but rather sure that's the case. The full featured mirrors have a puddle light built into the bottom of the mirror, as well as the LED turn signals, power adjust, heated, auto-dimming, etc.

There are also regular 2003+ power mirrors with LED turn signals, heated that do NOT power-fold. I used to sell all these mirrors and fielded the same questions from customers. If the mirrors are not the full featured mirrors (puddle light being the key visually) and the dealer told you they were power-fold ...I've never heard of that before.

Starting in 2003 2500 "LT" trucks came with the full featured mirrors OR the power tow-camper mirrors. LS models usually have the standard power/heated mirrors with built-in LED turn signals ...no power fold option.

Tophog are you the one who was selling the oem tow/camper mirrors a while back? I need some for my truck.

I see you have the TTT mirrors on yours how do you like them?

Do they stick out farther than stock mirrors when retracted (how much farther, I have a 8'6" garage door to get through) and do they go out far enough when you tow something?

I bought a new 8' 6" wide cargo trailer and my stock small mirrors aren't cutting it.

My truck is a 2003 LT and the mirrors are heated and electric but just are too small. No LED turn signal, no power fold, no puddle lights, no nothing.

So should I get the factory tow/camper mirrors that power extend or a set of TTT mirrors or a set of the Cipa mirrors (that stick out Too far IMO). Or is there something else new out there for mirror's

Any suggestions?

Thank's DD

Yes, I used to sell all the GM mirrors. Sold them as a side gig but no longer selling as I don't have the time. I do know another source if your looking to buy GM OEM mirrors, however as far as towing mirrors go I would go TTT. I've tried them all and you noticed the TTT's are still on my truck http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif That's for a reason. I'm not pariticularly fond of the overall look/shape however when it comes to coverage they are the best hands down. The spotter mirror coupled with the larger mirror provides 110% coverage from the side of your truck outward. Ii can watch cars coming up on my side pass from the large mirror into the spotter mirror with some overlap. The GM OEM tow/camper mirrors have a HUGE blind spot on the PS side. I nearly took out a couple ricers more then once and that was enough ...where I no longer could trust the mirrors or myself and started looking over/back everytime I wanted to move over ... I do like the amber LED's in teh TTT's as they compliment cab lights nicely and also function as running/marker lights.

On edit. Regarding width, etc. I really haven't measured but think they may stick out an extra inch or so over OEM tow/camper mirrors when retracted but may be the same. I always pull into my garage at an angle so I usually have plenty room to clear the mirrors. I tow a 102" wide body cargo trailer often and can see down the sides of it with no problem. The OEM mirrors provide good coverage down the side of a trailer ...it's just that damn blind spot and no spotter mirror that bothered me.Edited by: tophog

Well, checked out my mirrors. They have turn signal and are supposed to be power fold, but no puddle light so I don't know what that means. I'm gonna take it to another dealer and see if they can fix. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I would first verify the mirrors are powerfold. Personally I haven't seen any mirrors that have the powerfold option other then the "full featured" mirrors which have everything ...including the puddle light built into the bottom of the mirrors. It could be the dealer is telling you they are power-fold mirrors when they are in fact NOT.

GM dropped the puddle lites after 03, I think, the 04 don't have them.

Since u have the power switch inside all u need is the reflash that was listed above.

Did not know that on the puddle light ...another way to cut cost I guess. Thanks.

My 2004.5 mirrors are power fold without the puddle light. I don't think they even offered the puddle light option for 2004.5.

If you have turn signal, heated mirror(rear window defog switch activates), and auto dimming, then you should also have power fold.

I just figured it out. GM swapped the puddle light available in 2003 for the new LLY/injectory design. they had to recoupe some $$$ for the new engine/injectors so they opted to remove puddle light from mirrors http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif

Crghill,

Can you (or anyone) verify that the power folding mirrors can be
installed on a 2002 2500HD and work with only a reprogram? Or are
additional wires needed? I've searched the archives and can't
seem to clairify if different harneses/switches were installed.
When I asked the dealer I was told they weren't available until 2003 http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif

Thanks,

Michael

The dealer is correct. Pre-2003 trucks do not have the required electronics for the mirrors and the wiring is different. I know some people have "retrofitted" 2002 and older trucks to make the turn signals work, etc. however one would have to add a switch or something and hardwire the powerfold option, etc. In short, you can't just reflash/reprogram a 2002 and earlier truck with full feature mirror code (DL3) or electronic tow camper mirror code (DPF) and expect them to work ... the electronics are different.

tophog,

Thanks for the clairification. I'll have to investigate the
necessary wiring in more detail to determine if it is worth the
effort. The powerfold option would be useful if it would only
require running the wires and adding a switch. Anyone happen to know or
have the wiring for the power fold (full feature mirror code
DL3)? I expect there is more to it than a simple switch to make
it fold/unfold, a control module perhaps?? Time to go digging http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

Thanks,

Michael

You might check with this guy for schematic info as he sells the GM mirrors ...actually who I refer people to now days since I'm not selling them anymore. Also, I know there are guys on fullsizechevy.com who have retrofitted pre-03 trucks/SUV's with the full featured mirrors. You might do a search on there for info.
