I don't put many miles on my truck. Would I be better off servicing based on hours? It is used every day started and stopped at 12 to 20 jobs a day. I have put 7700 miles in 402 hours on the truck. It used to pull a 7000 lbs trailer and in winter used for snow plowing. I average 8500 miles year on all my service trucks.

I think by the hour is the way to go for your use. Have you done an oil analysis? Maybe the best way to tell.

That averages out to about 19-20mpg. With that stop and go routine I'd change it every 4k. I assume your driveing a diesel. Would also get the oil tested at the end of 8k or somewhere in there. That will give you an idea of whats happening to the engine. Wouldn't waste money on synthetics. Keep an eye of the air filter to, I don't think that indicator on he Duramax is all that good. On mine, the indicator showed the filter was real good and to look at the filter it ddidn't look to dirty. I changed it at 13k and was surprised how much better it ran. My wife said it was all in my head.
Let us know what you wind up doing.Edited by: Bill Gisse

I think GALLONS of fuel consumed is a better measure.
You could just go by what the engine oil life indicator says, I think
that takes a buncha things into account; revs, temperature, cold
starts, total starts, etc.
