OK I read the posting from Eric @ DmaxalliTech on the fuel injector failure tsb and found it interesting that the ball seat is subject to wear with particles larger than1-4 microns and the oem filter is good for 5 micron.Brilliant! So #1what filter packages do you guys out there advise and #2 those of you that have the extra filtration under 5 microns have you had injector issues? I have a 01 and had the injectors replaced back in july at approx.60,000 miles and already have 15,000 miles on the new injectors so I'm very interested in updating the fuel system to help keep them alive.

From the different posts on this site; it seems whether you have an extra filteration system or not, it is a roll of the dice whether you will have injector problems. I have read people that have the extra filteration system and they have had injector failure.

Wonder why GM doesn't opt for a 1-2 micron filter if thats where the injetor problem really is. Edited by: Bill Gisse

I received a letter from GM acknowledging injector problems in the 2001-2002 trucks and the letter extended the warranty period on the injectors. In the letter, GM mentioned two predominate modes of failure for the injectors. The first category of failure is "crack injector bodies". Will supplemental fuel filtration help this problem,,, most likely not, since this failure falls in the category of design/manufacturing defect. The second category of failure was listed as "ball seat erosion". A source of "ball seat erosion" is excessive particulate matter in the fuel source. Some fuel filter studies have pinned this to particles in the 5 - 7 micron size. I believe supplemental fuel filtration will help this category of failure.

A Supplemental fuel filter will only help reduce wear on the injectors over a long period of time. A supplemental filter will not prevent every type (category) of fuel injector failure (cracked injector bodies, bad electric solenoids, etc). If you plan on keeping your truck for 50k miles or less and then trade it off for the next improved model, I would not waste your dollars with supplemental fuel filtration. On the other hand, if you run up high mileage on the vehicle and plan on keeping the truck past the 100K mile warranty, then supplemental fuel filtration will save you money in the future.

So #1what filter packages do you guys out there advise

There are three readily available kits from vendors on this forum:

1. Nictane Fuel Filter based on the CAT fuel filter

2. Lubespecialist Fuel Filter based on the Racor fuel filter

3. Kennedy Mega Fuel Filter based on the Baldwin fuel filter

All these fuel filters have been shown, through testing, to lower the particulate count in the fuel.

4. Make your own from readly available parts and filters.

I chose #4, used a wix filter head, a baldwin BF7633 filter, some hose and fittings. Cost about $80 total.

I agree with Allan's post almost 100%. I believe the filter is a good investment no matter how many miles you plan to run your truck. I think the secondary filter would be a good selling point. There are very few people that have run the secondary very long that have posted an injector problem. The debate whether they help is long over. All people have to decide is whether their $40K investment is worth another $250. I just installed a kit for a guy that got 160K out of his original injectors before having a problem. He had 200K on it when I put the secondary on. He used to be an 18 wheeler driver and throughly understood the dual filter setups. He said if he had know about the kits he would had one put on when the truck was new. Later! Frank

Frank B -

Do you favor pre or post OEM filtering. Just curious, that's all.

I subscribe to the 10micron pre-OEM filter thereby helping the OEM do the job it was intended for - assuming the oil companies and retailers have done theirs.
