ok, i know ill need to get gauges but what effect will the chip have on the engine, will it cause it to blowup a lot sooner than it would have witout one. let just say i dont wanna put a chip in for $300 and then have to turn around and spend even more money reapin the engine.

Adding a chip won't cause your motor to blow up, but if you do it, you need proper instrumentation first, Boost and EGT particularly.
You'll have to monitor temperatures more closely with a chip to prevent damage, but as long as you do, it won't have much effect on engine longevity.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gifthat what i was wantin to hear cause my dad didn want me to get a chip cause he was afraid it would cause problems with the engine a lot sooner. Im not what u would say a mechainic in any way, could u explain a lil on the instrumentation of boost & egt
The chip won't blow it up, but your right foot may...maybe that's what DAD's worried about....

Pyro is the important one for saving the block but boost is there to let you know what your really making. The more you step into it and all.

Pyrometer shows Exhaust Gas Temperature. Keeps you from melting the pistons.

That and don't hotrod it. Keep an eye on the crank pulley and harmoic, and keep up the maintainence.
pyro shows you how fast your fuel dollar is burning.Edited by: quantum mechanic

My reflashed ECU has resulted in a decrease in fuel mileage. I'm still having trouble keeping my foot off the pedal otherwise it's great especially for towing.
