: First Oil change
PalmValleyGMC 10-16-2004, 04:54 PM I just did my first oil change (3,000miles) last night on my new 05' GMC 2500HD D/A . I went with 15w-40 Rotella T and an ACDelco filter (PF2232). All went well until I cranked it up and looked at the oil psi, it was reading approximately 75-85 psi at idle but after getting up to operating temp dropped back down to normal (30psi) . A little concerned about this I got up this morning and took it for a spin and again while it was cold it had abnormal oil psi (60 idle and 80psi 2500rpm) until it warmed up. So is this normal ? I have checked the dip stick, it's within range. I put in 10 qts. Should I be concerned with this and take it in ?
And I also hear a intermittent ticking noise now too.

Welcome to the forum.
Oil pressure is fine, and welcome to the infamous Duramax tick

dwrat 10-16-2004, 08:45 PM Don't worry at all!!!!!
This is 100% normal.
Enjoy your truck.

skoryaro2 10-16-2004, 08:50 PM It's normal - my '05's the same way. Only diff is I just did my
first oil change at 1200 miles (rotella T 15w-40) and my Duramax "tick"
has gone away - for now???
PalmValleyGMC 10-17-2004, 12:45 AM Thanks for the welcome and for the replies.
I never heard the ticking before the oil change. What type of oil does the factory put in these beasts ?

Go to this link for TSB info about the "tick":

Don't know what factory OEM oil is used. Maybe someone in the
know will chime in. Alot of people reported the tick starting at
first oil change. Mine went away (for now) after the first oil
change.
skoryaro2 10-20-2004, 10:10 AM 240 miles into the second oil change......the tick is back!
Enigma 10-29-2004, 01:12 PM Just did my first oil change on my 05, is it just me or was your oil filter nearly impossible to get off? http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif I must have monkeyed with that thing for over 1/2 hr! Finally broke down, went to the auto parts store and bought an oil filter wrench, which promptly collapsed the filter!! Finally with about 5 min of steady pressure on the wrench the filter broke loose. I'm posting this so anyone who may be close to their initial oil change on an 05 will be ready for the battle with the oil filter.

Same with my '04.5. In fact, every new Chevy truck I've owned feels like the weld the filters on from the factory!
Enigma 10-29-2004, 05:01 PM Glad to know it wasn't just me, sorry to hear it's happened to others. I didn't know it was a requirement to weld or super glue your oil filters on the truck, must be some new requirement I skipped over when reading the book http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

My '05 oil filter was extremely tight from the factory but the worst part of changing the oil was cleaning the oil out of the skid plate (this took twice as long as the oil change itself!). As soon as most of the oil is drained and is no longer gushing out, it drains right onto the skid plate. I guess next time I'll have something to deflect the last of the oil to avoid this problem. No ticking yet...................
Goldneye 10-29-2004, 05:25 PM Can you say FUMOTO Valve. I do not personally have one yet, but it sounds like you could use one. Have you heard of them?
BudTX 10-29-2004, 05:38 PM If you think that the oil filter is on tight, wait until you change out the fuel filter!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif
By the way, I put the Fumoto oil drain valve on my 2004.5 at the first oil change. It sure makes draining the oil a lot less messy.

I haven' heard of the "Fumoto drain valvle", but will be doing a search for it shortly. Thanks for the info.......
Goldneye 10-29-2004, 06:14 PM CODiesel, goto www.kenedydiesel.com (http://www.kenedydiesel.com) thay have them.
hamsalad 10-29-2004, 06:19 PM The "tick" happened after my first oil change, too. I beleive there was a bulletin to address this so it would calm people's nerves, but there is no fix for it becuase there is really nothing wrong. It's just inherent in these types of engines. I do believe I have heard this tick on big rigs, as well, but much louder. Nothing to worry about and it has slowly gone away as I put moremiles on.
As for the oil filter. Wow, they put that thing on with some sort of hydraulic srew-on machine or something! it took a lot of effort and swear-words to get it off. I, too, collapsed the filter when I put a filter wrench on it. I actually used a small floor jack to push up on the wrench handle in extremely small increments after many failed attempts by hand.

I use a bent piece of sheet metal that's made into a flat deflector that sits above the skid plate.

This was my exact experience

I was at the engine line once. The guy that puts on the oil filter doesn't have a neck. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley24.gif

bajadave 10-30-2004, 06:57 AM I did my first oil change at 3500 miles. I had no problems getting the oil filter off. First thing I did was run to the part store and purchased a filter strap wrench, got under my truck and loosen the filter when the engine was cold and no pressure was built inside the block. I just cracked it a turn and started the engine to get the oil somewhat hot, then I removed the filter with little or no effort. Make sure you're not too loose or you'll have a mess. Keep a eye while warming engine. I too had a slight mess with the skids plate, had to remove it, clean it and replaced it back. Since then I've purchased a Fumoto Valve. I'm ready now!
