: Glow plug controller?
WheatKing 10-16-2004, 03:28 PM If it's not one thing.. it's another..
So.. i just changed out the oil pressure switch.. seems my glow plug controller stopped working..
All the wires are plugged in.. i do'nt get the glow plug light coming on, on the dash..
so i'm assuming it's not working..
i got 12v at the solenoid (i guess it is) because i accidently shorted it against the socket.. (this was after it stopped working btw)
checked the fuse.. it's fine
any ideas?

Texas Diesel Guy 10-16-2004, 06:36 PM One thing after another, thats how mine has been the whole time I've owned it.
Did you check ALL the fuses or just the Glowplug relay one? Could be another fuse causing the light just not to come on, can you tell if they glowplugs are actually being cycled or not? Hard to start cold? Is the relay clicking?
HowieE 10-17-2004, 10:01 AM There is a 20 amp fuse in the Pink wire that is the ign. signal to the controller. The Red wire has a fusable link in it. The orange and the orange /black wires going to each bank of glow plugs have a fuseable links. The Orange glow plug wire has a smaller orange wire thet feeds a 10 amp fuse in the under hood fuse center that feeds the light on the instrument panel. The glow plugs could be working if that fuse is blown without showing a light. I would check each fuse and fuseable link output with a voltmeter.
WheatKing 10-17-2004, 05:05 PM Once again.. thanks for the responses.. dunno what i'd do without this place..
All the fusable links were ok.. solenoid seems to be getting power, just not kickin over.. if i short the terminals on the solenoid the glowplug light comes on..
soooo. guess i need a new solenoid..
i tore it apart.. couldn't get it to fire myself on the bench..
btw.. what socket is needed to screw in the oil pressure sender.. i had to use channel locks because i couldnt find a socket deep enough..

Texas Diesel Guy 10-17-2004, 05:58 PM sounds like a bad relay to me.
I don't have the symptoms above, but related: my truck starts and runs flawlessly (for now http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif), but sometimes (ok, every other time) when I start it the glow plug light reappears a few times AFTER the engine has started. Once I put it in reverse I'm using the mirrors and don't see how many re-illuminations I get, but the glow plug light never reappears once I'm under way. Any ideas? Thanks!
BOB, the glow plugs will operate untill the cylinders all warm up to operating temp if i'm not mistaken, this is normal. I know mine will, esp. when it's cold.
Thanks JBT4! So, they cycle a tad until a condition is met . . .
Right, thats my understanding of the system.
Texas Diesel Guy 10-18-2004, 07:56 PM Mine's the same too, always has been.
steiner43511 10-18-2004, 08:24 PM yeah i thought mine wasnt working right too, untill i read about it in a 6.5 repair manual.

This is normal and is called "afterglow" it help the engine smooth out quicker when cold.
WheatKing 10-19-2004, 10:57 PM Welp..
got a new solenoid.. and it still didn't work..
found a thin little ground wire had come loose to the engine block.. ?!? came outta the wiring harness.. hooked it up.. and BINGO..
so.. the last few months..
new boost solenoid
new water temp sensor
new oil pressure sensor
new liftpump and fuel lines
new downpipe.. still have to install the crossover
i still have a tranny fluid leak somewhere..i'm thinkin up front by the rad..
Anyone know where this ground goes??? attached to the back of the passenger side head..
i'm thinking it might go to the ECU.. but.. seemed to be a weird place for a ground..

quantum mechanic 10-20-2004, 10:26 AM In the chilton's manual, It only shows the EGR engine wiring but all wires come from and return to the ecm from the solenoids.
