I know its probably been ask a thousand times, so I will make 1001.

I just changed the fluid and filter in my 99 Sub. When I bought the fluid and filter at the local parts store, I asked how much fluid the service would require. I was told 7 qrts. So that's what I poured back in. Must have been to much since the fluid is up to the bends on the dipstick. I have drained some back out (thankfull to have a pan plug).
How much should I have put in. Thinking about draining pan again and starting over from there.

It is hard to remove all fluid just from the drain pan area of the 4L80x series. Some of the fluid will remain in several locations like the converter.

Add 5 after the pan has been down, start it and check your level. Add as required from there.

I took a guess at mine. I figured about how much was in the drain pan and I filled that much. Then I started the truck and added as needed.
