: Blowing white smoke and I am afraid to ask...
NoHoosier 06-17-2007, 07:52 AM I just purchased a 2002 Duramax with 180000 on it. When I picked it up everything seemed okay. It has power, doesn't skip a beat, but after I had it a few days I noticed it was smoking when idling. And if I let it idle for a while, when I take off it looks as if I am working for the county and fogging the mosquitos. The amount of smoke diminishes after going down the road a bit but it always smokes a little. Power is unaffected still, she gets up and goes but I have not had her pulling anything yet.
I searched on here and I do not think it is coolant as the level has not changed. I do not smell fuel in the oil but then again I am not sure if I would know what I am smelling if it were in there. The oil looks good, smells like oil to me so I am fairly confident that there is no fuel present in it.
A couple of the injectors were replaced at 53,000 miles and they were all replaced at 63,000 miles.
I went through the truck and changed all the oils and filters and none of that had any affect on the smoke. I was hoping maybe a dirty filter might have been the issue but no luck.
I am going to take it to the dealer this week to have them look at it but I would like to sound half-way intelligent about what I am talking about and what I should be asking and what the dealer should be looking at first.
Any advice would be aprreciated greatly!
LarryJewell 06-17-2007, 10:14 AM my vote is on the injectors again
C.A.P 06-17-2007, 10:15 AM fuel filter or injectors!
Been everywhere 06-17-2007, 04:38 PM Injectors, the balance rates are out, doesn't have to have fuel in the oil. If the first dealer tells you that they note covered, try another.
halfshaft5 06-18-2007, 01:08 PM My truck did the same thing. You will even hear a knock under load too if you really listen for it. Yeah, its the injectors. I could clear a football field with mine so just take it to the stealer and tell them to poni up and replace ALL the injectors, under the special policy you will now recieve 8 new injectors instead of jsut the ones that are bad.............Schedule the dealer visit.
cumminstrokethi 06-18-2007, 01:34 PM fuel filter or injectors! x2
SpoolUp 06-18-2007, 08:45 PM I had the exact same problem. I bought about 2 months ago and everything seemed fine, then after a couple of weeks I noticed smoke and fuel in oil. I just got my truck back today with new injectors, took care of all the problems. I vote for new injectors!
NoHoosier 06-18-2007, 09:27 PM Thanks for the info. My truck is scheduled to go into the local dealer on Thursday. I sure hope you guys are right and my "new to me" baby gets a fresh set of injectors! I'll let you know what they tell me.
drsorter 06-20-2007, 05:08 PM 200,000 miles is the limit on the extended warranty coverage should cost you $100.00 since injectors were done once --good timing!
dairydude 06-20-2007, 05:24 PM yeah, hope your lucky enough to get new injectors with 180000 on it. Thats what it sounds like to me
BamaTJ 06-20-2007, 11:44 PM Mine is doing the same with 140k on it. Had the injectors checked a few months back and they were not bad. Since then it has started smoking the white smoke.
Arcing 06-21-2007, 12:27 AM Welcome to the WHITE SMOKE club!
dickie5656 06-21-2007, 03:52 AM Might be valve seals.
BamaTJ 06-21-2007, 01:39 PM I am havng the problem also but it is just at idle and not a ton of smoke. No fuel in the crankcase, at least as far as I can tell (how do you tell other than smell?) Coolant level is not dropping, only thing else I can think of is bad gas as it started out of nowhere
sparky1562 06-21-2007, 01:46 PM Place a spot of the oil on a white paper towel. If a halo forms around the drop, there is diesel in the oil.
NoHoosier 06-21-2007, 09:23 PM Well the dealer has had the truck all day and they say they don't know what it is yet. I asked them if the put a scanner on it and they said they did but it did not produce any codes. They said they had to check some other stuff and ould keep it overnight. I did not ask specifically if they checked the balance rates of the injectors, I ASSUMED that would have been the first thing they did. I am off of work tomorrow and will pay them a visit in person and find out what they have or haven't checked yet. I really hate dealing with these people.
8100 Power 06-21-2007, 09:58 PM So, If you have GM replace all 8 of your "faulty" injectors, Are they not suppose to last awhile. Im read alot of thread were people has had injectors replaced muptilple times...
JDTRIP 06-21-2007, 11:33 PM Injectors most likely. I'm on my fourth set,and always white smoke at idle.
BamaTJ 06-22-2007, 10:41 AM The other thing is that I don't have a lot of white smoke, but I do have white smoke. It is ONLY at idle, or at least that is the only time I can see it. Any other possible causes besides injectors? Anybody know how much a balance rate check will cost at the dealer?
cooperhauling 06-22-2007, 10:58 AM mine did the same crap white smoke at idle all 8 got replaced
NoHoosier 06-22-2007, 03:17 PM After paying Andy Mohr Chevrolet in Plainfield, Indiana $93.50, I finally got my truck from them. I am fuming from these guys.
I get a phone call from the advisor, Ryan, and he says that it is blowing white smoke but it is nothing to worry about, I will be fine... for now. Maybe down the road, he says, I will need to replace the injectors. I thought why wait? But I didn't say anything, prefering to go see them in person.
I get to Andy Mohr Chevrolet in Plainefield, Indiana and I am instructed to go see the cashier. She presents me the bill and guess what? No balance rate numbers that I had asked for and that was even stated on the work order. They bring the truck back in and within just a couple of minutes, I have the numbers. Now I do not know how they get these numbers but I thought it was rather quick. The tech comes in and throws down a yellow Post-It note with some figures scribbled on it. He says, "Here, I don't know what good they will do you" and leaves.
I ask to speak with the service manager at Andy Mohr Chevrolet in Plainfield, Indiana. He tells me that the injector replacement is a one time deal only and since mine were replaced 130,000 ago, I am not getting anymore replaced on GM's dime. I asked why there were other owners going on their 3rd and 4th sets and he could not tell me. He said it is GM's policy, not his, to only replace them once. I asked him to show me in the Special Policy and he couldn't. He said that the Labor Ops number is a "T" number and that indicates a one time only replacement. I walked out on him, paid my bill and on my way out I said a few more things to both the advisor and the service manager.
On the Work Order it states that the "#1 and #8 injectors are a little high on the balance test but nothing serious." Here are the numbers that the tech scribbled down and threw down in front of me:
#1 - 2.3mm
#2 - 0.2mm
#3 - 1.0mm
#4 - 0.4mm
#5 - 0.6mm
#6 - 1.8mm
#7 - 2.1mm
#8 - -5.5mm
I am confused. If #1 and #8 injectors are high, why doesn't what the tech scribbled down show that? It looks like #1 is within limits. #8 looks like it is out to me but then I am kind of out of my knowledge band here.
Just FYI, Andy Mohr Chevrolet in Plainfield, Indiana found nothing else wrong with the truck, only the #1 and the #8 injectors were high but I need not worry about them until some time in the future. And mind you, it took Andy Mohr Chevrolet in Plainfield, Indiana TWO days to diagnose this after I told them to look at the injectors first when I dropped the truck off. Any one have the number for GM?
BamaTJ 06-22-2007, 03:48 PM Nice, does anybody know that there threshold is for when the replace the injectors? Like if the rate is above X?
NoHoosier 06-22-2007, 04:18 PM On the phone now with GM. I have only been on the phone with them for about 30 minutes now and still no results.
heck, they didn't even know about the Special Policy covering these injectors!
NoHoosier 06-22-2007, 04:46 PM YAAAWN..... another 30 minutes gone by. Now GM is calling other area dealers to find out how they handle injector replacement under the Special Policy. You would think they would be TELLING the dealers how they should handle this.
SpoolUp 06-22-2007, 08:18 PM They are feeding you some BS. There is no way they don't know about the special policy, this is the main problem with these trucks! They probably get a couple of calls a day about the special policy. I hope you get this resolved. Good luck!
lancerdually 06-22-2007, 10:41 PM Had to have my injectors replaced at 82K along with ecm. When I picked truck up from dealer, with only deductible charge, the service manager told me that Chevrolet doesn't condone them telling it, but Bosch (the injector manufacturer) recomends that diesel drivers use an additive such as the Standadyne additive he sold me at $7.95, enough to do I belive it's 5 tanks full. Later I had a problem with an injector pump on my backhoe and the injector/inj. pump specialist told me that the new lower sulfer standards by the goverment for the diesel we all buy is killing injectors everywhere and he recomended the same thing my dealer did. Say the sulfer helped lube the injector tip seals and now there is not as much sulfer content so injectors are failing. Hence I use it in all my diesel equipment now.
Hope you get the problem worked out.
NoHoosier 06-23-2007, 09:36 PM Well I called another dealer today to try and get the scoop on the Special Policy and if my truck would be covered even though it has already had a set of injectors put in 130,000 mile ago.
I called up Bill Estes Chevy and guess what I learned. The manager there is best buds with the service manager at the first dealer I went too. But he assured me he would look into my situation, speak with his bud, and not let him being best buds with this guy skew his research. Ya right! He is going to get back with me on Monday.
I need a good dealer in Indiana. Anyone know of one?

ecc_33 06-24-2007, 04:43 PM your getting hosed.....the injectors should be replaced as many times as needed under 200k
BigDMax05 06-24-2007, 09:28 PM Let me first ask if you got that truck from morans auto sales? Second I am really good friends with the service manager at Sam Pierce Chevy in Daleville. Matter of fact two of my best buds are used car managers there. I have always had nothing but good results from them. Matter of fact my 01 has a blown head gasket right now and I took it there for diagnostic and the service manager told me that honestly he did not want to see me spend money on diagnostic time but rather have his diesel guy come over and answer some questions. He steered me in the right direction and also the service manager told me if I needed any of the special j-tools he would lend them to me. I know that the diesel mechanic I talked to said he has replaced about 6 sets of injectors among different trucks. I can call the sevice guy and see if he can shed some light on the situation if you would like! My 01 has also had two injectors at 73000 and all 8 at 103000. hope i can help
My truck puffs white smoke at idle. I thought for sure after 177000 miles it would be oil. Am I wrong? Mine is a 2003, can you get new injectors from the dealer without warrenty?
NoHoosier 06-26-2007, 01:14 PM Well no phone call from second dealer on Monday. I am done with them too because I never got that warm fuzzy feeling for them anyway. Thanks to a couple of people on this board, I will travel a little ways to get to dealer that WANTS the work. Its apparent that no dealers around Indianapolis need the business.
I checked the dealer rating thread and nothing for Indiana. At least I can go on there now and rate the two I know.
And to the fella that asked me if I bought the truck from Andy Moron's Chevy, no I did not. Not that I didn't try a couple of times but they think their trucks are plated with gold.
Taking the truck on a camping trip for the 4th so we'll see how it goes and maybe try again when I get back with another dealer that was recommended by someone on this board. For the time being, I am going to try the Standadyne that was suggested. It can't hurt I figure and it might help.

You're still covered for the injectors, 7yr/200k. If one dealer hassles you about it try another. I'm speaking from experience, sounds like it could be your balance rates. Fill out a signature so that we know what you got and how it's modified. Welcome aboard.
I have an 03 silverado CC 4x4 175,000 miles. At 75,000 miles the engine would not start without starting fluid. How embarrasing, using starting fluid on a 2 year old, 40,000.00+, diesel truck. The dealer said there was nothing wrong with the injectors. The salesman there was a friend of mine, so he ordered injectors anyway, which took about 4 weeks to get. so in the mean time I would park where everyone would not be able to see me.They put the new injectors in and it has started everytime since. Now it has 175,000 miles on it and it is smoking white at idle and upon full acceleration on the highway. It also seems like MPG. is kind of low.
