Anyone know if the rocker arm shafts have dowel pins? I found two bigger pins and thats the only place i could think of.

I don't believe so. The only thing IIRC is the bolts that hold the shaft in place, also keep the rocker arm shaft from rotating.

What do you mean you found dowel pins? Where? I hope not loose in the motor.

They were lying on the bench next to my heads and i thought they were the ones that went with the heads but they were too big. They aren't the ones for the back engine plate either. :banghead:

What are the dimensions of these pins? The only large pins I can think of off the top of my head are the alignment dowels for the tranny, but they have a large taper on them.

How far are you into the motor? Are they hollow or solid? Dia?

I think there is 2 sets on the tranny mount plate. One set on the block to the plate and the other set from the plate to the tranny. IIRC, there's also one in the crank at the tranny end. Hope this helps.:)

There are dowells on the head for the rocker shaft assembly. Two on each side. On the five bolts that hold the rocker assembly on, the dowels are located on 2 and 4 on the head. Also, as a note, it's a good idea to replace the rocker bolts with new. They are prone to stretching and not giving a good torque yield. Overkill maybe, but I have had trouble with them. I have actually streched one to the breaking point trying to reach the factory torque spec. The heads have 2 dowels per side also.
The upper valvetrain on these motors is a little shady at best. New fastners would be my advice.

Hallow pins dia is approximately .73 relaxed here is a pic. I just found them and the motor is complete ready to go in and don't want to have to tear it all the way back down chasing this.
Thanks guys

Looks like the cylinder head alignment to me. I'll check for sure tomorrow if needed.:)

Hate to say it but, those look like the #5 (very rear) main cap dowels.

Yep that is what i concluded, the machine shop must have put new ones on when they mocked up the motor and i ended up with two sets.:)

That would have sucked if they were left out, I hope the motor runs like a champ.:)

Tore it down just to make sure and that was them. Cost me an extra day but I can't take any chances with a high dollar motor.

Very sound thing to do. I would have done the same for the sake of the life of the motor. The thrust bearings would have held on for a little while though.

So T, where they missing in the new engine or just an extra set?

Just an extra set. But I started thinking twice about if i put them in so i tore it down to be sure.

I trust you replaced the main studs down there?
