Hello, I just dropped by from the 6.5 group down the road to ask a question or two. I see that the DM group is split at 2004.5. So whats the difference between these trucks. I am looking for a DM down the road and would like to know the differences. Thanks

Hi Bowtie,

Welcome to the DM side. Halfway through the 2004 product year GM
changed the DMs. Pre-2004.5 is known as the LB7. Post
2004.5 is known as the LLY or Second Generation. Changes were HP
went from 300 to 310 and torque went up from 520 to 590 (605 in the
2005). Other changes include going to a variable vane turbo and
pulling the injectors out from under the valve covers for easier
repairs. Supposedly have fixed the injector failure problem but
some people are still having it (very small percentage). At least
now they are easier to repair. Other changes include adding
exhaust gas recirc (EGR) and catalytic converter. Those can
either be good or bad depending on your philosophical beliefs.
You'll find lots of posts on pulling the cat and at least a couple
sections on defeating the EGR. It recircs the exhaust back into
the intake to burn off more NOx for cleaner air. A lot of people
pull the plug on it so they aren't getting all the soot circulating
back through their high dollar engines.

New toy, new forum I guess (actually this is my first forum
experience: all others will be tainted from now on). My
Impala is at my Dad's house 2,000 miles away. So it doesn't get
driven much right now. When I transfer, it's going to Omaha with
me, and then I'm going to start really working on it. . . supercharger
probably, who knows what else. I've been neglecting her too much
lately.

So where are you and "transfer" to Omaha ? Are you in the Air Force?

In Newport, RI right now. . . . and since I'm going to an Air Force
Command, you'ld think AF, but I'm NAVY all the way!
Submariner. Just remember, there are a lot more planes on the
bottom of the ocean than there are submarines up in the sky!

YEA I guess so. Although airplanes could be considered flying subs sort of. We have Navy at Tinker AFB OK where my reserve unit is located, so I've gotten sort of use to seeing the navy around, just not use to seeing ya in those BDU's. I have friends at Omaha working on the 135's there. I use to work those to when stationed in Alaska years ago. Good luck

Actually, I think very highly of the Air Force. They really know
how to take care of their people, much better than the Navy, but I
still wouldn't trade my job for anything. . . I haven't had to
experience the BDU's yet. . . I'm not sure I like them. . .

Dangit, there I go again hijacking the thread. . . I am way too easily
sidetracked. . . Now regarding the 2004.5. Many are leary of the
LLY, but in time there will be just as much stuff out for it as there
is currently for the LB7.

SO there is quite a few differences between the motors? Sounds like heads were changed for the injector changes. I assume you can see these just opening the hood?

Besides it's my thread so hijack is ok I guess. LOL Edited by: bowtie
