: Haunted rear windows!!!

Here's the story, as told to me by my wife.....

She unlocks all the doors with the remote and opens the rear door and loads some items in the back seat area. Get's in the driver's seat and start's the truck, and while starting the truck, the rear windows roll themselves down. She tries to roll them up from the driver's door switches, and nothing happens. She checks the window lock button and no help. Turns the truck off and restarts, same thing, the windows stay down and won't go up. She get's out and opens the back door and pushes the button for the windows to go up and they don't. She keeps pushing the button and eventually they roll up from the rear controls. (forgot, somewhere in there she calls me on my cell at work in a meeting and yells at me because it's my fault). She drives it the rest of the day, start stop, no problems with the rear windows going down on their own. I get home, everything is working fine when I check it out. Figure this one isn't going to be worth going to a dealer about since it isn't acting up right now.

Anybody with similar problem or suggestions? Edited by: srode

sounds like early haloween goblins have infested your truck. Maybe a string of garlic hung from the rear view mirror will do it.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

I will start off by saying that I don't know how the switches and wiring in these trucks is configured, but maybe I can spark and idea or 2 to check.

If both rear windows went down, there is only one position in the truck that controls both of these windows....drivers door switches. Also, if the drivers switches were sending the command to roll down the windows, then trying to command them up from another position might not allow the window to go up (kinda like cancelling each other out). I think someone once said the power windows operate on a Bus. It could be the electronics in the drivers door were sending the signal to the rear door motors to lower the rear windows. Eventually, the signal may have timed out and this allowed the window switches to close them.

I may be totally off base, but at least it is a different idea than ghosts and goblins.

Theory sounds solid to me. If so, it may or may not ever recur. It
could be a 'stuck bit' or logic hangup, tough to know for sure. (But
just in case, get some garlic)

The drivers door module could also and most likely is at fault. It has been known to cause a lot of wierd problems. This only applies to 03 and 04 trucks.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, they make sense. I didn't think about the only single place to cause both rears going down being the driver's door. If it happens again, I'll have here leave the key off for a while and tap the switches some before she start's it back up. Maybe de-energizing the door module and switches will free them up.

Did the controls get wet before this all began to happen?

Srode,

The same thing happened on my truck ! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley29.gif

It was a hot day and I had my AC on, all windows were up. I remember getting on the fwy on ramp and sure enough I hear my rear windows roll themselves down. I tried to roll 'em up..but Could not get 'em up, I pulled over got in the back seat & tried to roll 'em up....nothing. I decided to turn off the truck and wait a couple of minutes...when I restarted the truck everything was back to normal.

Well glad to hear I'm not the only one, I will hold off on the garlic for now. Diesel 5, did it only happen the one time?

The controls have never been wet either. Hope it's a fluke and don't have to worry about it. Bigger problems to worry about now, the Allison is slipping (post under the Allison Section).

Took it to the dealer for other problems and they fixed the Haunted seats, found a poor ground.

"Ground and setting U1041 loss of communication with the ebcm due to poor ground under driver door on the chassis, cleaned and cleared code N9502"

Good to hear they found the problem. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif

I was very surprised that found that one as it surely wasn't going to be replicated. They did this, researched a transmission problem, and replaced the rear differential cover that was leaking around the plug (3rd time in for that problem). Had it done washed and ready to go by 4:00pm after dropping it off at 8:00am with no appointment. Gotta give this place an A+ on customer service! The only problem is...... I now have 4 quarts of grape juice I won't need for a long time since they just replaced the fluid with the diff cover! Edited by: srode
