: 90K Oil Analysis - Silicon Down w/Uni!
Idle_Chatter 10-14-2004, 01:57 PM Well, just received the the results of my 92,237 mile ferrographic oil analysis. All indicators continue to be low or declining, including Silicon from 6 to 5 with over 9,000 miles on the oil and with a Uni air filter. I personally believe in the principle of oiled foam air filtration, have been using it in my truck with excellent results for over 85,000 miles (two generations of Amsoil and now a Uni). My analysis results can be seen in my Yahoo briefcase, use the SPREADS link below, go to "All Folders."

Glad to hear it's working.......
You hit the nail on the head Tony
I dont have as manny miles as chatter but my oil sample came back with a silicon count of 9 with 10 k on the oil. Live in the country and roads are very dusty But you people need to remember these filters are junk Per P.C. and his word is gospel
Idle_Chatter 10-14-2004, 10:15 PM Yeah, when I brought up the fact that I had excellent silicon numbers in my analyses during Spicer's "witch hunt" against oiled foam filters, he tried to say "well, you could be getting more dirt than your oil shows through your filters." But I replied then and still say now - so what? dirt that doesn't get into my oil doesn't hurt my engine. Low silicon in the oil is the WHOLE POINT. If my oil is clean and my wear and contaminants are extremely low - that's what it's all about!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif
Tinbender 10-14-2004, 11:50 PM I too recieved the results of my oil sampling last week and the silicon level had dropped. The first sample at 16000 miles using a K&N air filter the Silicon level was 24, (above normal). The second sample at 21000 using a OEM Delco air filter the silicon level dropped to 18. The last sample at 36000 mile using the Amsoil air filter the silicon again dropped to 11. All oil change intervals are approx 5000 miles, mostly highway towing.
These results don't follow the test results, but I'm satisfied for my usage. I'm going to continue to run the Amsoil filter and sample again about 50K.

problemchild 10-15-2004, 01:45 AM Wow those are some high silicon numbers?????
I got a count of 5 with my stock ac delco last time with 7800 miles on my delo.
Looks like geno still has a chip on his shoulder.
My word isnt gospel but a $100, 000 dollar bench test sure does say whats going on.
And I would believe it and my own eyes over some yahoo with an attitude.
Eat sh*t geno........

diesel66 10-15-2004, 12:20 PM Some people my not like K&N's. But since I switched from stock to K&N, my silicon level has gradually gone down every oil change from 8ppm to 1ppm. Now it stays at 1-2ppm. I pull an oil sample every time the oil is changed, and change oil every 100 hours, or 3000 miles, whichever comes first. Long live K&Nhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
GMC-2002-Dmax 10-15-2004, 05:42 PM It has long been understood that the dirtier a foam/oiled filter gets the better it filters.........
I have some 15K on my AFE filter and it looks dirty.........not real dirty but a nice good dirty...........http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif
Maybe after flogging my truck for 4K miles with the TTS Xtreme and a dirty AFE filter I'll get an analysis done http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley3.gif
I'll get back to ya guys if I decide to do it..........
Maybe I'm better off not knowing http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

All I can say for you stupid child Is mine is working and if you understood that holes in a filter when new does not mean install as you did then you got holes in your head and Im not talking bout yo BIG A$$ MOUTH

SPICER 10-15-2004, 09:36 PM Some people my not like K&N's. But since I switched

Question1...who does your oil sampling?
Question2...what kind of oil are you using?
I ask because MOST oils brand new will show a 5-7ppm silicon right out
of the bottle. I have NEVER heard of a 1ppm silicon, probably
imposible. Also, I don't know very many people who defend K&N as a
"high efficiency" air cleaner, and this INCLUDES K&N themselves!
They won't step within RADAR range of an ISO air filter comparison test
because they KNOW their filters are sieves. AND I have all the proof
you could ever want to gander at. And yes, the K&N was the worst at
filtering dirt.
Tinbender mentioned a silicon level 24 declining with the Amsoil. I had
an Amsoil too. DO NOT CONFUSE declining silicon numbers with an engine
breaking in! No matter the oil or the air filter, you WILL see numbers
decline until about 25k miles. After that point you should be seeing
single digit silicon numbers. Mine went down after replacing my Amsoil
with the OE paper. I was at 14-15ppm with Amsoil, 7-9 with paper. The first single digit silicon number was at 27k miles. SPICER

Kennedy 10-18-2004, 01:34 PM Silicon numbers start high, then decline. Mine has been in the single digits with the Uni,but I recently changed to a popular gauze type and hit 45ppm.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley3.gif
I've tracked my oil from day one and found that the first 2-3 dumps typically show a sharp decline in silicon.
I should also add that I dropped a foam filter in this truck the day I brought it home.
