: Clutch Pedal Position Switch
MaxRock 06-13-2007, 07:35 AM Traveling this week and got to my truck at the airport about 8:30 last night. Pushed in the clutch and turned the key and nothing. Looked down and my floor mat was under the pedal, moved it and nothing. Held the key in the start position and just pumped the clutch like mad and finally it made connection and started. Drove the 55 miles home, got in the driveway and nothing.
I'm guessing the clutch pedal position switch bit the dust. I was reading this thread http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=113089&page=2&highlight=clutch+safety+switch . Two questions, 1) Since it happened last night and I'm not going to have time to look for the switch this morning, is the switch located under the dash like the older trucks or is it under the hood? 2) Michigana Joe 2 stated he jumped the switch with success, has anyone else had success with this?
Thanks,
MaxRock
jon72 06-14-2007, 04:33 AM The switch is under the dash on the clutch push rod.Jumping the switch plug will work but you can't use cruise control. The first two terminals(A/B)shuts off the cruise when shifting.Leave these two alone and jump C/D and E/F.
MaxRock 06-14-2007, 10:09 AM Thanks for the info. I went out last night and the truck cranked. I tried it a dozen times and it worked. I tried it again this morning and it worked again.
Now I'm not sure what the problem was. I hate intermittent problems. I want it to fail hard so I can see if the CPPS is really the issue. Now I don't trust the truck. My concern is it may be something else, just not sure what. I may have everything ready to jump and not do until it fails again.
jon72, if I short/jump C/D & E/F and leave the CPPS plugged in, the cruise will work...right?

jon72 06-15-2007, 04:47 AM If you you have jumper wires running across the plug you won't be able to plug it in.The cruise will work unpluged, but when you go to shift with the cruise on it will free rev.
Before my CPPS went I had a couple of no starts too.
Good luck!
Bcaswell 06-15-2007, 05:32 PM Mine done this one day about a month ago but has not done it since and hope it doesn't
MaxRock 07-05-2007, 02:17 PM This sucks...the CPPS is so intermittent in its failings that I'm not 100% sure this is the problem. We took the truck on vacation and it acted up when we left from breakfast. I pulled the plug, jumped C&D and E&F (had trouble getting the straight pin in contact E) and nothing. Played with the straight pin in E, still not all the way in, and still nothing. Tried one more time, the pin went in like the other 3 and it started. It kinda hesitated then started. Didn't make me feel to confident, like something else may be the culprit and it just happened to start the 3rd time.
When we got to our destination, unloaded the truck, parked it and tried to start it...nothing. I was not up to messing with it after driving for 12 hours, went out the next day and it started. Started every time in the last week and a half, until last night.
Leaving to go watch fireworks last night and nothing. Didn't have the time to fool with it last night. Checked it this morning, nothing, tried one more time for good luck...it started! :help2: :confuzeld
Anybody have any insight they would like to share????

tysmith 07-05-2007, 05:47 PM VATS problem? Do you have any remote start/security bypasses? Just thinking out loud here...
I have an Astrostart and am curious if the switch itself fails, will my remote still start the truck? I'll have to look at the wiring schematic. I'm thinking not, since I only tapped one wire on the switch...
What about your starter? Not that they seem to fail often...
MaxRock 07-06-2007, 10:50 AM No remote start/security bypasses. Not sure what you mean by VATS.
It is weird, when it works, the starter sounds great and the truck starts as normal. It is like a switch is turned off. It may be the CPPS going intermittent, I just can't get the switch to fail long enough to seriously troubleshoot it.
I don't feel confident driving the truck with it acting like this.

jon72 07-07-2007, 04:59 AM If you get an extra hour or two you could take the switch off and take it apart.?It's a very simple switch and you could tell right away if it's not working right or not making good connections.Just an idea.
VA_Dmax 08-09-2007, 04:46 PM Has anyone had any luck finding this part? My truck is dead now and Im going to head to the mechanic's now to try and use the fix of jumping across the terminals. It's been dead since Saturday. GM will not give me any information on the part other than the fact that there are 6 dealers in the country with the part and not one will sell it because it is special order part. GM customer service has no idea when the part will become available as it is on national back order. If jumping the terminals doesnt work tonight, I have a pile of scrap metal on 4 wheels. After my experience with GMs customer service this will definitely be the last GM vehicle I ever purchase. If you cant provide parts for your vehicles when they break down, I dont need your vehicles.
tbalz 09-06-2007, 05:18 PM Mine gave me a problem on the 2nd day I had the truck. All I did was make sure the wires were in the plug and the plug was fully in. Over 3 years later and I havent had an issue since.
I found out tonight I can start my truck with the clutch out. Luckily I had it in neutral. Anybody else have that happen? I wouldn't care but my kids like to start the wife's minivan. I've always told them they can't try to start my truck but the clutch safety would prevent an accident just in case. No so any more.

Yah mine will also start with the clutch pedal out. I don't know what the deal is with that? I don't think theres a problem with the saftey switch because with my predator in the live diagnostic section you can check to see if your clutch pedal is in or out and mine worked fine.
MaxRock 10-09-2007, 12:23 PM Well, at the beginning of a 1500 mile round trip to Talladega this weekend, the "intermittent" problem quit going intermittent. It is now a permanent problem. Stopped for a pee break at the first rest stop in Alabama on I-20. Went to start the truck and nothing. Tried several times and nothing. Looked around and found one of the terminals on the starter solenoid hanging.
Looks like it's time for a new solenoid. Ebay has them for under $50. Anyone have any idea how hard it is to remove the starter?
Thanks,
