My SES light is on and it sounds like I have an exhaust leak on the turbo side of the motor. I took it to Advance Auto to get it scanned but their scanner is down. Any ideas what it may be?

Exhaust leak blew the vacumn line to the wastegate actuator off? Or burned the vac line? Just a SWAG without more info.

Cracked cross over possibly. I had the same problem last summer, except mine was coming from the driver side. Exhaust leak sound from the crack. SES where turbo related codes because it wasn't getting the proper exhaust flow to make things work right.

Don't let it go too long. Mine start out minor and got major in a hurry.

Haha, mine took about 12 seconds to get major.

Here's a thought - crank it up, get out, pop the hood, look under there and tell us what it is......................

I had an exhaust flow/ murmer sound on top of the RH manifold. Checked it with an open end stethascope & the leak was prominent on all ports except the front one. On inspection the 3 rear ports were warped & machining was necssary. Check yours the same way to see if you have a leak. After machining the turbo spooling up sound was obvous.

I had a friend look at it today. Tried to scan it again (after replacing the cigarette lighter fuse) but still won't read. Any ideas on that? As for the exhaust leak, he told me the noise I hear is just the A.I.R. pump being a little loud. While driving home the SES light went out. No hoses melted or disconnected that we can see.

No A.I.R. pump on the 6.5, vacuum pump yes but no A.I.R. yours is OBDII 96+ years & self power thru diagnostic plug if plugging into cigarette lighter you have wrong scanner OBDI powers with cigarette lighter. Go to Auto zone or other they will read for free, yur location says North Fl JAX perhaps ??? shame I was there this week left yesterday, and had my Snap on with me & could have read them for you, I'll be back in Jax next month have 2 tests to run at Cecil field at the jet shop, I'll have scanner with me then also

My bad, the vacumn pump is what I should have said. I read one of the threads on here and thought it indicated the OBDII port was provided power through the cigarette lighter fuse. I checked this fuse and found it was blown, so I replaced it and had Autozone try to scan it but their scanner would only read the last vehicle they had scanned, it would not update to my truck. (their scanner plugged into the OBDII port AND the cigarette lighter) I took it back to my friend's and tried his again (it plugs into just the OBDII port) but still nothing. What fuse is the OBDII port on if not the cigarette lighter? By the way, I live about 40 miles south of Tallahassee.

UPDATE: My test lights are both apparently broken, but I do have a voltage/multi testmeter. 12.6 volts at the battery, tested the cigarette lighter fuse, got a tone. Checked voltage at cig. lighter, shows 3-5 volts (I may not be getting a good ground, I'm doing this by flashlight and trying to hold everything). Checked for voltage on OBDII port pins- 0.000 volts on all (5 I think) pins. This was using the same ground used for the cig. lighter. Maybe I'll try a better ground in the morning when I can see. Anyone have suggestions? Looking at several OBDII forums and this seems to be a common problem with several different makes. The common link seems to be the cig. lighter fuse on all.

UPDATE II: Found the problem with the OBDII port. Auxilary fuse bad. Replaced fuse, scanned, code236. Zero vacumn to the wastegate. No suction from the orange line to the vacumn pump.

UPDATE III: Little or no suction from orange line when running, I can wet my finger and it won't stick. I don't have a vacuum gauge, but I can shut the truck off and suck on the line and I can't pull any air through it so I believe the line is not leaking. Disconnected what looks like a MAP sensor on the intake, pins looked fine, no corrosion, reconnected that. Am I overlooking anything or do I need a new vacuum pump? I can get one from Advance auto with a lifetime warranty for $118.00.

I'm waiting for some expert advice before I spend money on a part I might not need. I see Binky has a similar problem and the same code. He put a vacuum pump on his and still has problems. What else could this be?

Gauges would be a good investment for you (since it looks like you tow from your signature). The gauges also would have given you a direct indicator of the problem (ie: no boost).

You could buy the vacuum pump for $118 OR you could get a Turbomaster (http://www.heathdiesel.com/T/Chevy-GM/Chevy-9601/Turbocharger-Boost-Controllers/) from Heath Diesel (Supporting Vendor) for $109 and never replace another vacuum pump, W/G solenoid, or cracked vacuum line again!

Your choice...

The Snap-On scanner showed 30 inches of boost, just no vacuum to the wastegate.

30 inches of boost? Not in this barnyard.

I say-I say-I say, If y'all got no vacuum to the wastegate, y'all got no boost, y'hear? That snap-on scanner done snapped off, son. Nice truck, not too fast, know what I mean?

What you got yourself there is 30 inches of mercury... 1 bar, 1 atmosphere, 101 kPa. About what you would have showing on there if the engine was turned off.

I agree totally with Goldsburg ... a turbo-master solves the whole deal in ten minutes. You got a '98 'F', so there's no EGR to worry about, either.
