Last week I removed the passenger side battery to change the fuel filter (man was that on tight and I could not find a filter wrench to fit it). Anyway I saw some rust under the battery on the tray which I put baking soda on. This truck is just a year old, should it have that already??

NO it shouldn't

Check to make sure your battery is not leaking somewhere or that it's been overcharged which could spill some acid too.

And make sure that the battery is held down well so it won't move around on the tray.

If it's just some surface rust sand it down and repaint it with some black rustoluem. But find the reason for the rust in the first palce so it dosent come back. If it's rusted bad you can try to hit the dealer up for a new one or buy it your self. Their probablly not that expensive.

I have had good luck with older cars by removing tray from vehical,
priming it(after cleaning it) with red oxide primer and then giving it a couple of coats
of spray on rubberized under car rustproofing. This coating resists
acid really well (better than paint) should a leak re-occur in the
future.

I had the same thing happen. It was caused by a leaking battery. I
had it replaced under warranty...

Check positive post for leakage, for some strange reason Delco batts. have been having this problem for the last 3-5 yrs., If it is, replace it

All batteries have a vent, even sealed ones to keep pressure from
getting too high and I suspect corrosion in near this vent. As to why
it leaked, it could be overcharging, overheating for high underhood
temps as well as a pssoible defect.

Well I didn't see anything leaking from around the terminals as they were clean so was surprised to see the tray in that condition. I'll have to call the dealer and make an appointment to get that fixed then being it is still under warranty.

Thanks

I had the same problem. Was leaving a huge rust trail under the truck in the driveway. Took it to the dealer and they replaced BOTH batteries and supposedly painted the battery boxes. (with 35k on the truck)http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

The vent is not by the terminals, it is generally on the side at the
very top and in the center on left side of battery when viewed from the
terminals

My '05's pass battery was loose from the factory. The hold down
clamp wasn't tightened down at all. I saw a few drops of liquid
in the tray. Still have to remove the battery for clean-up.

My 01 leaked a battery at the terminal. They replaced it under
warranty, cleaned up and repainted the battery tray. Great service!

I had three go in my lifetime. Same thing... leak at the terminal.

Thanks for the replies, I have to bring it in for the tailgate cable fix so while it is in there I'll mention this to them as well so they can take care of it.

That probably explains the rust stains I saw on the floor under the truck (in that area) as well.

Well I took it in today for the new tailgate cables and mentioned the rust. They ended up replacing the battery and the tray as well as cleaning up the area around it. Thanks for the tips on what it was and that it was covered under warranty.
