: Nitto Terra Grapplers
bub_breeding 10-13-2004, 11:34 AM I am in the market for some new tires. I think I have decided to go with the Nitto Terra Grapplers. My troubles come when deciding what size. I have read and read here on this forum regarding this, but let me ask you this. Should I go with their 285 or 295? I know both will fit since I am currently running Maxxis Mudder 315s (minnor rubbing on upper A-arm). To save you some looking here are the stats:
285...... OD = 32.68 W = 11.33
295...... OD = 33.27 W = 11.73
my 315s OD = 34.5 W= 12.8
I want to lower my bars back down some inorder to recover some of my shock travel (plus adding some washers). Someone Please talk me into one or the other. pros / cons on this Nitto would also be great.
Bowtie Boy 10-13-2004, 12:41 PM I have NITTO's on my truck and I love them they have an off road look but ride very well. I asked around before getting them and I was told they had the "flatest carcass", well they are very flat,as opposed to a big bubbly tire I think it helps them track very straight.
Fingers 10-13-2004, 12:54 PM I've been very happy with my Nittos. I am a little on the large side
with 365/65-16's but they ride exceptionally well. Very quite for such
an agressive tread.
bub_breeding 10-13-2004, 02:20 PM If you guys have any pics, I would like to see them.
Fingers 10-13-2004, 02:31 PM Best I have right now

Mark_my_word 10-13-2004, 02:37 PM Hey Fingers, you sure have a lot of shovels...
I've seen you truck here before. Very nice!
Burner 10-13-2004, 03:02 PM I didn't see what kind of rims you had? I'm guessing they are OEM? Just for refrence, I've got the 285's and I've had the 305's. You mentioned lowering the truck a little. I would say go with the 285's for the height and turning. The 285's should have less affect on MPG vs the other tires.

motovet 10-14-2004, 02:59 AM I like my Nittos too...except they wear too fast. Something different for me next time.
Burner 10-14-2004, 04:56 AM Yep, me too. However, for rought and tumble stuff, they really are tough! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley15.gif

Chevyfreek 10-14-2004, 08:32 AM I have to agree as well. I have had my 265 Nitto's for almost 24,000 miles now and they may make it to 35,000 before they need to be replaced. They are a great looking tire, but I think they are really more suited to off-road use as they wear quickly with lot of highway miles on them. I will have to try something different myself next time...
Here is a couple pics from when they were brand new:

You got any pics of the 315 mudders? I'm assuming they're on stock rims?
Why are you wanting to downsize tire size?
bub_breeding 10-14-2004, 01:46 PM ChevyHDGert,
Yes my 315s are on stocks, but sorry... no pics. I was wanting to downsize for various reasons: 1. to get my gearing / shift points somewhat back in prospective 2. get my turning radius back to normal. (currently rubs on upper a-arm at full turn) 3. to be able to lower my t-bars down a little. Right now my front end is too stiff for my likeings; with it being as stiff as it is and running mudders you can almost feel every lug as it hits the pavement at a slow roll or coming to a stop. But on the up side, they look GOOD!
HDchevy 10-14-2004, 02:32 PM I agree next time I will go with somethng else. They didn't wear very well, the sidewalls cut in the rocks and they turn into slicks in the mud.
just my .02
bub_breeding 10-14-2004, 02:49 PM Here is a thought to ponder... a local tire dealer has a set of 295/75/16 BFG A/T for $174.95 ea (tax and all = $765.54) that he bought on a promotional deal (not blims). This option would cost me about $120 more. Are the BFGs worth this difference?Edited by: bub_breeding
Aggie91 10-15-2004, 01:03 AM I think the BFG's are about the best thing going for hiway/off road
combo. I will probably get over 45 - 48K miles out of mine w/90%
of those miles on the hiway. I am on my 5th set on 3 diff trucks
& as you can tell . . I like them quite a bit http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif

caroftheweek 10-15-2004, 02:48 AM Hi all:
I had 295x75x16 Terra Grabbers on my crew cab and i loved them. I would highly recommend them to all. you have to raise the torsions a bit but you will still have the good ride. you may also have to trim the plastic inner fender well on the driver's side, on the front side of the tire just a bit to relieve the rubbing.
HDchevy 10-15-2004, 08:59 PM I just ordered the 315 70 17 BFG AT/KO's Hope it is better than the Terra Crapplers
moss022 10-16-2004, 03:09 PM discounttiredirect.com has them really cheap. 285 for $127 and 295 for $137 per tire. they say free shipping if you choose ground. anyone ever heard of them????
Burner 10-18-2004, 02:18 PM Anyone notice that the AT tires seem to wear the first 50% of tread really fast? Heck, that last 50% of tread seems to last 3 x's as long as the first 50%. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif
Chevyfreek 10-19-2004, 01:55 PM That is what I have heard as well. My Nitto's just seem to be wearing fast in general though. I had the factory firestones for over 55,000 miles. They were gone when I changed them though, but they wore even...
bub_breeding 10-19-2004, 05:03 PM I have really appreciated all of your comments. I decided to go ahead and spend the extra money and get the BFG A/Ts. So far they are great http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif! Drastic change from the Maxxis Mudders. My Dad just put 285 Nittos on his 1500 Z71. He seems to really like them as well.
JimWilson 10-21-2004, 10:25 PM Your Dad will probably love them, I know I do.
I was one of the early adopters -- I've had a set of TG's on my truck
for over 2 years now -- and I must say that I don't have the wearing
problem some speak of. I must have 35K on them by now, and it looks as
though I can easily make 50K. That would be fine with me.
motovet 10-22-2004, 12:45 AM I do really like the way my TG's handle and tow....just only going to get 30/K if I'm lucky.
Burner 10-22-2004, 12:56 AM Wear problems? If I get more than 20 out of a set, I'm doing well. It's hard too keep a set when you're RWHP is above 400 horses. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
motovet 10-22-2004, 01:19 PM Well..that is part of my problem alright....470RWHP for me. I was probably being optimistic when I say 30/K...but these tires are a bit soft and I try real hard to not smoke them too much. Others with power have had better luck with other brands. I need to decide real soon what my next set will be. The Bridgestone Dueler AT's look good, and Costco has them at a reasonable price...anyone run those?
Chevyfreek 10-25-2004, 01:50 PM I drive my truck at higways speeds a lot and I think that is why they are wearing so quickly. The ture temps are higher at highway speeds so they tend to weat quicker. I think the tread compound is just to soft for a vehicle that sees a lot of highway miles. Another 2000 miles and I will have 30,000 miles on my TG's...
