I am looking at a 88 single axle with a Jasper reman 3208 in it. What do I need to know about this thing. It drives nice and shifts good, seems to have plenty of power. A couple of holes in the floorboards and a little rust on the rockers, other than that not bad. I think it scraped snow/salt for a local school district in a previous life. I do not know how many miles are on the new motor, so that will be a mystery. I will be using it to pull a 20k piece of equipment, so let me know on your opinions on that. BTW, it is an air brake truck.

Thanks
Jeremy

3208 is not overwhelmed with power especially if it is a non turbo.

Do you think it will pull the machine OK, and is the 3208 easily upgradable ( turn up pump, etc).

The 3208 is a gutless wonder. Its decent on fuel. You can turn the pump up, but durability goes way down, and they arent htat strong to start w/. YOu cant inframe a 3208 rebuilds are costly. In case you didnt knwo dump trucks are money pits, all the pins bushings, hoists etc. Breaking springs due to weight and rough roads. YOu dont mention single or tandem axsle, in a tandem situation def underpowered there are better out there. A 3208 w/the right transmission will yes pull your load, very fast no. Its all about gearing. Ive seen a dt466 international (wich is a very good medium duty motor that is wet sleeved and easily overhauled) 190 horse w/a 15spd trans, geared so low that 55mph was 2700rpm move 64,000lb truck around. Slow yes, but w/a lot of gears and a low rear end got it done.
