i want to dyno my truck and i am not sure which gear to leave it in . or do i just turn off the overdrive? what about egt's , how high is to high for a dyno run?

Some feel that 5th gives better numbers, but I'm not looking for numbers so much as accuracy, repeatability, and consistency of tests. Same with peak numbers. If you want the highest numbers and your useing a DynoJet type dyno 5th gear will show the biggest numbers. If your on a load cell dyno Clayton, Mustang or Superflow 4th gear with TCC locked. If you do not have a Tech II to lock the TCC put the truck in Tow/Haul with 5th gear lock out on. That is where i see some slippage sometimes is in 5th gear.. I would think with built tranny use 5th , w/out built tranny use 4th. WOuld that be the correct assumption? DavidTD 10-14-2004, 09:20 AM Dyno Jet recommends top gear for a turbo diesel. I have done many test and in most cases HP is basically unchanged between 4th and 5th or 5th to 6th but the torque number is a bit higher in top gear. If you load the truck, as mentioned use direct gear. If you are concerned about slipping the tranny, the more load OR higher gear will increase these chances. If the truck owner doesn't believe I should be running in top gear, I offer to do it in both.
