: What are normal, safe LBZ EGT's

You hear figures thrown around about EGT's on LBZ engines, but does anyone have any authoritive information of what are normal safe EGT's on an LBZ? It seems very easy to get to 1100 to 1200 degrees going up a slight grade even not pulling a load with a stock engine.

At what EGT temps do you REALLY start doing damage? I suspect it's higher than 1200 degrees or we are all in trouble!

My EGT gauge is marked red from 1350 on up.Try to keep below that pulling a 12,000 lb. fiver which can be hard to do in the hills.1200 should be a safe number for sure.Wonder if anyone has puked an engine from too high EGT and just what damage was done.

What about while racing when they really get high? Mine has been at 1500 I saw 1700 once when I ran the crazy larry tune. Truck still runs fine but is that doing damage? I don't run that any more. but 1500 seems to happen alot.

1200 is something you should be able to hold, spikes should remain below 1350 imo.

I have seen 1450° with my 04.5 LLY and my LBZ when pulling my toy hauler, even stock. I try to keep my EGT's below 1350° whenever possible, and so far, so good.

I've spiked to 1400, let off at that point. The sled puller guys are usually maxed out the whole run. They might have a good idea what it takes before killing it.

I've run 1450* for several miles while towing up hill. No problems so far.

I can tap 1200 easy myself..

I would have no fears of pulling 1350 all day long.

What would break from High EGT. Turbo I assume but what else?

I often see spikes up to 1600

Never seen my EGT's go over 1200 degrees, but then, my LBZ is bone stock.

This is a topic that needs to be discussed:

But lets look at what is happening here: There are many questions that need to be asked and answered.

First: where do you take you readings...pre or post turbo.? kinda impotent don't ya think.?

How long at said temperature do you run.?
How high a temp do you run (refer to above question)

How fast a cool down do you use.?

I cannot believe that running a hill for 10-15 minutes pulling 12K with T's in the 1400-1500 will do any harm. However harm may come into play for longer periods (at the same work load), or for much higher temps.

Changes in metallic crystaline structures (BCC / FCC), typically occur when the metal is held at elevated temperatures for certain periods of time. I myself would like to hear from GM themselves just what those limits are in terms of potential damage to the turbo impellers.

The exhaust manifold on the other hand, is in my opinion not something to worry about...as long as one remembers it is made from cast iron - a brittle and not very ductile (bendable), material and as such it prefers to be cooled slowly to minimize any internal stresses due to temperature differences. So if you've been pulling hard and are about to shut down, let your motor cool off a bit before shutting it down completely.

I have been wondering the same thing, i just installed my gauges yesterday and am pretty surprised at the temps im seeing while empty!?

Mods in sig and today crusing on the freeway with the pred set @ 65hp i was seeing Temps 750*-800* doing about 65-70 mph, 80-85mph egt's @ 875*-900* @ 65mph i nailed it and it got up to about 1250* @ about 105mph WOT, then i let off but it would have kept climbing... It idles at about 375*-400* this just seems kinda high but i dont really know.

I have a trip planned in Aug. to pismo so we'll see what happens when i strap 10k to the back of this thing. Most likely ill return to the stock tune before the trip but i may try the 40hp just for ****z and giggles.

Will the Down pipe, Egr blocker and finger stick help out much? What should i expect from it???

Before I put on the MBRP Cool duals I was hitting 1475 regular on any hill with a decent grade too it. I pull a 13k 5er @ approx 110 Kmh (approx 70MPh) I have yet to try a real good run after the exhaust, but I am hoping for a drop of around 100 * as I think that 1475 is too high,, 1400 I can live with for short bursts,, getting close to the top etc.

Pre turbo..I see 1450 just punching it, not pulling anything. I see around 800+ on level ground empty at 65
