OK. Brakes are something I have always avoided doing myself on cars. Just always seemed a little complicated for me.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif I want to learn how to do it though. Can anyone give me some tips on checking the brake pads for wear on my truck?
Do you have to pull the wheels off?
What is the minimum thickness allowable?
What is a good replacement pad for the HD trucks?
Thanks in advance!Edited by: cargopilot

Not to barge in on ya, but id also beintrested to the answers of some of your questions... Ive heard that chevy/gm brakes arent the best, and can be rough on your rotors if not caught, i wonder if any aftermarket ones were any different?

Brake replacements is not one of the things you learn on the net. Find a friend that knows how and let him teach you. I haven't heard of brake problems with the HDs. Later! Frank

Frank, ya big ruiner!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
Boys, Frank is correct though.
Playing with an HD's Brakes are not for the inexperienced. They work the same as a car's but everything is larger and heavier.
But I will give you some tips.
I just went out and look at the calipers. You can't see very much in the thickness of the pad other than then substantial.
You would have to pull the wheels to get a good look.
Overall, the 2500 HD's braking system is very good. I've heard very little in the way of brake pads or rotors wearing out in less than 70,000 miles.
GM matches the type of pad with the rotors for good braking and longevity. I would just be guessing on the material used. maybe some type of ceramic based pad but I don't know.
Some pads have tattle-tail grooves, some have squeakers, I don't know what's on our trucks as I've not rotated the tires yet.
Be careful if you've not done a brake job before and get some experienced and knowledgeable help if you try.
Hope that helps. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gifEdited by: DavesDmax
