: Changing Axle/Diff Fluid?

I have a couple of quick questions about chaning the axle fluid. First,
how do I actually do it? I looked at the bottom of the axle, and there
seems ot be a plug there, but it is not a bolt. What tool do I use to
remove it properly. Second, do I fill the rear with 2 or 4 quarts of
oil? I am using Mobil 75W-90. Finally, I have about 3000 miles on my
truck, with about 500 miles towing a 5700 lb load. Should I wait till
5000 miles to change the oil, or should I change it now? Thanks. :)

Change it now. mobil 1 is a good chioce IMO use a ratchet or breaker bar minus the socket with just a short extension. 4 quarts or theres abouts IIRC. Change the front too while you are at it IMO If you have some 4x4 time the transfer case would also be a good idea IMO. Or change it after winter when you use it a bit if you havent really been in 4x4, couple quarts of mobil 1 atf is what i would recomend for the case. Most of the innards are spinning in the case and the front end even if you arnt in 4x4. I am admitadly anal too. Oh and JMO but change your allison spin on filter while you are under there and then change it ever change or every other oil change depending how long you go. JMO Also a good time to hit everything with a grease gun since the general seems to go lite on the grease in some places on some trucks?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif And maybe add a exhaust, some gauges, a trans upgrade, program and some N2O while you are at ithttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

If you've been towing, I'd go ahead and change it now. There's considerable "break in" and heat generated in the rear diff, especially when towing. The drain plug in the bottom of the differential takes the square end of a 3/8" socket wrench or breaker (without the socket) The fill plug on the rear cover is 15mm, I believe. There's a lot of discussion on the level. My 2001 specifed 3.8 qts, which was supposed to be about 1/2" below the fill hole. I'm getting ready to pull my cover and install a Mag-Hytec soon, but when I changed my fluid before I filled up to the fill hole.

Thanks for the help guys.

Definitely planning on getting some performance upgardes in the mix, as soon as I can afford it. ;) While we're on the topic, I'd like to know if there are any turbo-back exhaust upgrades that exit straight out the back rather than on an angle to the side. I'd love to have a dual exhaust that exits straight out the back. It just looks much better than having them go out on an angle.
