: transfer case removal
ssm58 06-06-2007, 05:28 PM I have to repair the tcase hole rub. Does the tcase have to be removed to replace rear half or can it be done with it in place ? I just had back surg. a short time ago and don`t want to aver do it by trying to lift case up & down.
I have never done the repair before but what are the symptoms of T-case rub? Thanks.
ssm58 06-06-2007, 05:41 PM Loose oil pump rubs a hole in the case, you can patch it but it will rub through somewhere else.
jmg343 06-06-2007, 05:48 PM i would take the t-case out. I doubt you can even do it with the t-case in, but who knows. its not hard to take it out, but, considering your recent surgery i would get someone to help with the lifting/lowering.
Any noise along with the rub? I have a squeak noise what sounds like a universal joint. Hopefully it isn't the T-case.
duramax 2001 06-06-2007, 06:11 PM michigan??? I would think about a trip to Merchant Automotive to see Eric. He is in Michigan and is the guy that designed the rub hole fix. I am sure he would treat you right. At the very least I would give him a call and get some answers to your questions from an expert.....
div4gold 06-06-2007, 06:12 PM You have to take the case out to replace the rear half.

mwgsstg1 06-06-2007, 06:50 PM Just did this complete job on my 3500 CC/DA, its not too bad, just time consuming. Follow the instructions from Tolli or I could email you my alldata instructions, either way, we can help you. The whole thing needs to come out so you can get the snap ring off the bearing!

modified 06-06-2007, 08:16 PM or like duramax 2001 said, if you don't have anyone to help you, and you don't want to risk more back issues, (which could be life long), go to Holland to Merchant Automotive.
Give him a call and :grd:
cwq21 06-06-2007, 09:40 PM I don't see how you could install the upgrade without removing the transfer case.
Get someone to handle the case removal and installation and it's not that difficult when it's on the bench.
Frank Blum 06-06-2007, 11:07 PM I pulled mine out today. I have Eric's pump housing. After inspecting my housing I chose to repair it. Nothing very hard especially if you have used Devcon in the past. I am taking photos as I go and will pass them on to Tolli and might put them in my garage. Later! Frank
SS396 06-07-2007, 01:29 AM Frank,
I am doing mine this weekend and I won't have any help to lower the TC to the ground. Did you use a tranny jack to remove yours? If so how did you do it?
I am planning on tilting the TC down off the cross member and sliding it onto a tranny jack.

You can do it that way but you may have to jack the truck up pretty high to get enough clearance. It was no problem getting the case out alone. The problem came putting it back in alone. It would have been a lot easier if I would have had help but that was not an option.
ssm58 06-07-2007, 07:38 AM Thanks for the input guys, Will try to get my son to take it out( 18 and he loves to drive the truck).
Frank Blum 06-07-2007, 01:01 PM SS I bushwhacked the first neighbor that drove by when I was ready to take it out. It is not very heavy but it is bulky. I could easily have done it with my floor jack. You can easily do it the way you described. I am withing for my neighbor now to put mine back up. I found reading Tolliwacker's instructions a big help. Later! Frank

ya know what, my pump just rubbed through wednesday night and now that you mention a squeek i have had a squeek for a while now that i thought was the universals but now that i think of it i wonder if it was coming from the tcase, i also had a bad vibration and a grinding noise just before it let loose. if i were you id check out your tcase, maybe you can catch it in time. im going to pull the tcase tonigth and if that squeek and grinding was coming from my tcase im thinking i prolly smoked the internals. damn i wish i had caught it earlier.
Tolliwacker 06-08-2007, 05:27 PM Mine made one Awful noise, and I still had to drive another 300 miles to get home. I pulled the case and I was fortunate I only had to replace the rear half due to some bad scoring on the case half on the inside. I was very please and thanked God I did not have any major damage.
Make sure you get a patch job on the hole and fluid back in the case before any damage is done, and then get the upgrade done ASAP.
