i am in the process of replacing my weak ass broken 10 bolt rear with a 14 bolt semi floater from a '99 gmc. just as the universal joints were about to fit together they didn't. the bearing cups are about 1/16 too small in diameter but about the same size too wide across the trunnion with the caps on. i have what is supposed to be an adapter u-joint but it is of the outer snap-ring type and my driveshaft is of the injected plastic/inner "c"-clip type. what the hell do i do now? if i press out he existing u-joint will it also have groves on the outer edges to accept the adapter's outer clips? please help! update---------------------------
i just have the wrong adapter. did some research on neapco's website(driveline parts manufacturer), full catalogs including vehicle lookup in .pdf format. seems they also make one with the inside lock-up that still has the outside lock-up on the other end. i have part#3-3140 and i need #2-1153. if you know the donor vehicles you can match up a lot of different stuff. good reference materials for anyone doing axle swaps or driveline mods. i'll be driving it again soon.
p.s.- they don't sell direct so i guess i can put the link in for reference. remove it if you must. www.neapco.com (http://www.neapco.com)Edited by: lupey6.5

Let me get this straight. You switched between the 1500 and 3500 axle and a 10.5 should be a full float, That's why you don't have to remove the entire axle from the differential "C" clip. The axle is removed by the 8 bolts on the hub, The brake caliper too but anyways..
I had to get a drive shaft from a salvage yard when I switched 10.5's in my '93. Measure the relative length, find a 3/4 or 1 ton shaft and it should fit right over the slip shaft coming out of the axle loop.

the 14 bolt i got is a semi-floater with only 6 lugs. the axle tubes are 3.25" diamerter

Ahh... the LD 14 bolt, Wonders never cease.
I asked about a 99 dually rear recently and the salvage wanted $950 USD.

this came out of a '99 gmc HD k1500 4x4 pickup. some call it the metric 14 bolt. it only came in 3.73 how covienient. FYI the conversion u-joint i had to get was a neapco 2-1153 it has the inner c-clip journal and cups and the other side is an outer snap ring type that is acctually held in place by these little t**s in the yoke on the dif. got it mated up today after work and now i have to set up the pinion angles, tack weld the new perches, remove the whole thing, weld the perches down good, paint it, take some pics, and button it up. then i'm crusin' again. don't worry i'll post the pics. this thing is a boheamouth compared to the 10 bolt and it's only 1/2" wider from rim to rim. lovin' it!

Hey Lupey, can I ask how much you had to give for it? I stuck a full-floater 14bolt with a detroit under an 87 1/2tn suburban of mine once and I'm just curious. Does it have the factory difflock (whateverthehell its called)?Edited by: w_huisman

drum to drum shipped from mesa, az. to richmond, va. a little les than $500. it was trrough a friend but he told me that these are pretty available in that area in the 2-3-$400 range. he had it on a k5 and swapped it back out for the 12 bolt for clearance(rock-crawlers, go figure) he had moved the perches so i had to cut/grind them off and replace them. i've got it clamped in place and once i finalize all my right to left and pinion angle adjustments i'm gonna tack it in place, pull it back out and weld it up. i was going to do this yesterday but it rained all day(my shop consists of an oak tree and a patch of dirt). if it isn't still too damp to safely weld out there i will have it done today and will post some pics tonight!

IIRC, I had a 14boltFF and a Dana 44 shipped from Utah to Iowa for a total cost of $9hundred something. I couldn't get my hands on a full-floater around here for under $700 at the time and I was in a hurry.
Sounds like fun. Brings back memories of my old Blue Burb. I hope she's happy with her current owner. Had a guy come up here to Minnesota to buy it and drove it home to Texas.
Ain't she purty?
