: a toolbox ?
Polarbear 10-11-2004, 08:42 PM I got to get a box for my truck asap....im going w/ a Al box(so ican polish some morehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif) but what im wondering is there any capacity differnece between the "high box" adn the low profile boxs?? i havent had a chance to look at any in person so i got no clue...Thanks-Adam
ockgator 10-12-2004, 12:06 AM I prefer single lid deep box. Look for 5 bar diamond plate and it's sweet looking. low profile is better for hooking up gooseneck(easier to see over), depth gives mine extra capacity, bottom of box being only about 5-6 inches above bed as compared to over a foot in shallow box
ratlover 10-12-2004, 09:07 AM What he said.
Even the shinny aluminum ones are coated, if you take of that coating and polish it it will look sweet but be prepared for lotsa matinance to keep it looking good.
I have a weathergaurd and have used em in the past. There is a big difference in price and quality. You get what you pay for IMO and they are great boxes.
HD-Nate 10-12-2004, 11:08 AM Polarbear,
I see you have a '03 Carbon Metallic like I do.
I prefer the single lid, low profile, (about 4 inches high) also. It hard enough to see behind you without the extra tall lids.
I have chrome set bars and the euro (chrome) lights on mine. When I set a chrome box on back it just didnt look right to me. Almost too much chrome (polished). I set a black box on it and it looks like its part of the truck and belongs there.
I have not bought one yet but was just trying them out. Not sure if I am going this route or just get a flat fiberglass cover for the entire bed.
Polarbear 10-12-2004, 08:36 PM the low profile box i was thinking of is only like maybe 2" high, then i consider the high to be 4-5"...
Rat- thats my biggest fear w/doing it...I polish the tunnel on my sled, but after the next ride its already dingy again...
I think the one the local guy had was Alumna?I bleive it was a Delta, wanted like 270 for it...just got to get over there and get it done
ratlover 10-13-2004, 10:47 AM You'll pay closer to 5 for a weathergaurd but there is a diffeence. If you want to spend the extra clams IMO its worth it. I dont like the "gull wing type boxes though, I prefer the 1 peice lids. Also JMO
Or get the box that sits in the bed, I think in the future I may go that wrote, better vis and a deeper box but then you can slide stuff underneath like sheets of plywood and such.
Burner 10-13-2004, 03:22 PM If you want a cover, go with a box that sits in the bed. If you want a drop-in that's deep and has visibility, get that 270 box. If you want a box that will last and look great, get the weatherguard. Most of the guys I see that have a "deep" box.....can't get to the bottom of the box. They actually loose tools and stuff do to the deapth.
So, it depends if what you want out of the box. Is this a working toolbox or the every now and then toolbox? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif

I've got a Highway Products box that sets level with the bed rail. It's about 30" wide so there's plenty of room. They're pricy ($700 if I remember right) but I've had mine 4 years and it has taken some abuse & still looks great.

I like my new weatherguard box (model 127) that I bought because of suggestions here. Time will tell how it will hold up but I'm pretty confident that it will last a long time judging from the construction and what others have said about it. It's also really nice to be able to open the box from the side of the truck http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif
Polarbear 10-14-2004, 12:40 PM The box is going to be used to store my coveralls, knee high boots, "rubbers" ankle high boot covers, my jumpers, obviously my toolbox, and other various odd/ends type stuff. The boxim lookin at isnt deep, prolly be good amt of room underneath w/would be perfect...
OneSilverTruck 01-10-2005, 09:12 PM I've got a Weatherguard like the one in WASkier's picture. Only wished mine looked that shiney. Mine is 8.5 years old, and is still going strong. It gets abused daily but is not bent or damaged. I finally replaced the "lift shocks" earlier this year and is good as new. I am however looking for either some "porkchop" syle boxes, or either the "5 drawer" type model similiar to what sears sells....any advice??

Geneva was one of the first to make these types of boxes, and judging by the way a lot of the others are made I believe that they are the makers of several other rebadged boxes.
The only bad thing with the ones that open left or right is that if you forget to shut the door without shutting the tailgate then you tweak the door.
These boxes are great, btw, and I believe are a necessity, even with a crossbed box.
I have one in my 95 and I like it a lot. You can get some with a drawer that opens left or right (depending on which side of the bed you want to mount it on) or you can get one with a door that his hinged at that bottom and folds down (flat on the tailgate). I would discourage getting one of them, because with the key in the door (which it will be every time, because the key is the only way you latch/unlatch the door) you will not be able to get into the bottom drawer without removing the key. (I normally leave a key in mine unless I go somewhere and need to take it out).
OneSilverTruck 01-14-2005, 12:02 AM Do you have any pictures of these mounted? Also, Can you still fit a sheet a plywood between them??
DuckhunterInTN 01-14-2005, 09:16 AM Do you have any pictures of these mounted? Also, Can you still fit a sheet a plywood between them??Here is a pic on a website I found. I don't believe you could fit a 4" wide sheet in the truck because they stick out further than the wheelwells do into the bed. You MIGHT could get one box and still fit a sheet, but I doubt it. They stick out about 2-4 inches (per side) further into the bed than the wheelwells, depending on the model of truck.
I can take some more detailed photos of the one in my truck if you like, but it looks just like the one below:
