Hey all, new to the diesel scene, but I just installed the hypertech programmer on my 05 CrewCab. So far the truck is definatly not as sluggish LOL. I used stage 3, and I am guessing I have to the trans adjust to the added power ... seems to shift harsh when you lay into it. Either way I will keep you guys informed

What are the HP settings on the hypertech ?

Did you do any additional mods to accomodate stage 3 (i.e. intake, exhaust, pyrometer, etc.)? I believe Hypertech increases the shift firmness on the higher levels to prevent slipping. Let us know how it goes mileage-wise and how it performs towing. I'm interested in getting the Hypertech mainly so I can adjust for tire size and scan for/clear codes. If it performs well I would also toss the new programming on the truck.

I just installed one on my 2004 LLY. Hypertech does not do any adjustments on the Allison, nor does it allow adjustment to the speed limiter. I only have a few miles on the programmer, and so far it seems to do what I need it to. Gets rid of some of the turbo lag and lets me adjust for tires. You can defintily feel more power. I was not looking for the "big" power that guys are getting with the Edge & others. Not bad for the $329 I paid. Although I did have to send the unit back to Hypertech because it did not recognize the code on my PCM. May have been becuse of the new flash update I had from the dealer. Hypertech provided good service, which was free since the programmer was new.

From Hypertech's website: "All diesel Power Programmers allow the speedometer and odometer readings to be corrected when using non-stock tire sizes. GM and Ford applications also adjust automatic transmission shift firmness electronically. Special torque-limiting calibrations protect the transmission during gear changes and eliminate the need for expensive transmission modifications."

How do you remove the speed limiter?

On the Allison you dont, at least not with the Hypertech. It gives you the option of 3 different power levels and tire size for speedo calibration, that is it. I just tried level 3 with an empty truck and I was impressed. No more turbo lag, and it gets up and goes!

I have an 04.5 with the hypertech and AFE stage II intake and Magnaflow exhuast. I have about 2000 miles with these mods and see a great improvement to power and responce to the pedal. I have found that you will be happier if you only use about 1/2 to 3/4 pedal. Stomping it will make harder shifts because you redline way to quick. Just play with the pedal a little and you'll see what I mean. Have fun.

I also noticed that after the honeymoon is over with your mods you will see a increase in MPG. I have gone up 3.0 so far. It is just hard not to play when you have all that power.

04LLYDmax, is that 3.0 increase hand calculated?

04LLYDmax

It is calculated with the trip odometer. Total miles driven divided by the total number of galons added at fill up. So if that is what you mean then yes hand calculated. If that is not what you mean then I am not sure what it is you are saying.

Actually you do. With Hpertech it automatically removes the speed and rev limiter, it is not a choice that you make....Be careful when hitting it.

I found on level 3 it did slip the tran in T/H mode and the Allison did not seem to overcome this. Perhaps it was because I was not towing---I don't know. I moved it back down one. I will tell you that I did not modify the exhaust or intake yet http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif But I do plan to do so. I don't think that had anything to do with slipping. With that said, it was recommended by the speed shop that I not tow in stage 3 without doing such upgrades, they told it would be ok in stage 3 empty.

It does throw off the calibration of the computer in terms of MPG, it did not seem to effect the speedo. I think I only gained 1 MPG on stage 1, the mileage went down on stage two and three. Even with mild or normal driving, the speed shop also told me the MPG would not increase without the above mentioned modifications, I did not believe them---guess I do now if 04LLYDmax is convinced an actual 3.0 gain.

Have you gone through more than a tank of fuel or so with the same driving to confirm that mileage? Have you driven in stage 3 with T/H mode on? Did you get the same slip?

I have gone through more than 1 tank and so far in stage 3 I have gained about 1.5 per tank meaning I went up 1.5 the first tank and to 3 on the second. I have not played with the T/H mode in 3 yet but will tomorrow to see.

Now if I understand your comment (jumper357) the speed shop said it is ok to tow in 3 if you have intake and exhaust. I will let you know soon. I am taking my trailer out for Halloween. I was told by Hypertech that towing in 3 was ok and they did not metion any other needed mods. I am not sure what to think of the 2 different opinions.

I think I would go with Hypertech on that one, the speed shop is a retailer who is in business to sell goodies, these items do make a differance based on our own wants and needs....even if it's just noise. I do think though one should have gauges if you run stock exhaust and intake. How about you other guys?

Gauges are next for me. Yes I understand NOW that I should have probably done them first. I am new to diesels and am learning as I go but I relieze I kind of went backwards in some things with my mods.

I have been looking at gauges anyone have opinions they care to share.

Well not to confuse the whole thing, but can gauges in any way void warranties? Plus it's an indication that something might be there---like a programmer. I don't want to add them just for that reason, but again....you have to keep you foot out of it since we can't tell what's going on. I guess they would be simple enough to remove, except the hole in the intake pipe.

By the way, some of the filter mods can void the warranty.

Man O War , might try Quadzilla tuner to get rid of speed limiter !! I also think Predator may have something too ..?

Guages should definetly NOT void your warranty !! Never have for me anyway.

hi fastoys,

Have you had any 0401 or 0404 codes from your exhaust. I also have 4" magnaflow (cat removed) except mine only goes from downpipe back. I keep getting these codes and only after i installed exhaust. Have not tried to unplug egr yet but thinking about it.

I have the 4" exhaust w/no cat and an air intake kit. I have seen no fuel mileage increase or any codes. I have the Edge and with it my mileage goes down. This is driving like my grandma at the speed limit. Can any body recommend a definate mileage increase modification other than a gear change?

I havent had any issues with codes caused by my exhaust . I do know that the 265s hurt the mileage alittle ! I did get 11.5 this weekend pulling a 29foot bumper pull Toyhauler . Lots of hills on mostly 2 lane.

Fastoys can I assume your cat was removed since it is turbo back?

I have a magnaflow 4 ", K@N dropin filter and with the Edge I was getting horrible mileage. I have since removed the Edge from constant problems and too many trips to the dealership. I dont want them to get suspicious. Also, I now have a brand new Edge system that I have absolutely no use for. Anyone interested in it? Never been used. Sent new from Edge and I think I'm gonna go with Hypertech or Diablo sport or something that dosent mess with wiring harnesses. I also want to be able to read DTC's and tune the speedo for 33's.

Hey guys,

Well after havin the programmer on for a week I love it no codes at stage 3 just a lot of black smoke when ya floor it. Only mod I have done was a drop in K&N Filter ... I love the results ... I was pretty impressed when I punked some dipshiat kid in a 4.6 mustang LOL ... couldn't even pull on the crew cab with about 1,000 pounds of tools in the back LOL. Ah well so far I like it, haven't tried towing heavy loads with it just yet.

Where is the cheapest place to get the hypertech programmer for the LLY

Martel brothers is cheap, but the supporting vendors can match it.

I just installed the Hypertech PIII last night. Great box, makes good power. The Allison needs a little time to get used to it, it's a little jerky at first, but after about 1/2 hour it smooths out pretty well.

I did have the exhaust codes before I even installed it, but I cleared them out and they didn't come back.
