I have an '03 Chevy SB that when driving on the highway (relatively smooth interstate) at around 70 mph there is a crackling sound coming from the dash area near the windshield(drivers side) and on an occasion from the passenger side too. It would almost sound like a very hard (but light) driving rain hitting the windshield. If I slow up to around 65mph it all but goes away or its so faint it's hardly noticable. I'm stumped. Anyone had this happen to them??

I have the same noise with my 2002. It got worse when i put on an aftermarket bug deflector. I'm stumped too.

Mine goes to the dealer thursday for service (power steering leak) i'll see what they find.Edited by: 2002 max

The sound you are hearing it the side windshield weather stripping tapping on the glass. You can get some black RTV and put a dot every inch or two down both sides and eliminate the problem. You can also tape it down with electrical tape (black of course) to verify before you tack it down if you want. You can also use double sided foam tape as well (if you can find some black) to tack it down. These are the 3 solutions that I know of to solve your problem.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley23.gif Edited by: chuntag95

It's form your bug defletors changing the way the wind hits the windshield. GM has updated garnish for the windshield on trucks w/ bug deflectors. Had mine replaced last visit, no more noise.

They told me to take off the bug deflector.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif I engineered around it for cheap. I didn't know they had new garnish, but since I'm out of warranty, they probably wouldn't spring anyway.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif

Thanks Chris; It makes sense when you think about it. I'll let Uncle Chevy fix the prob. since it's under warranty. The mechanics in our are have been on strike for 2 months now. I may run out of warranty if they don't go back soon.

I had the same problem after installing an aftermarket bug deflector on my 2001. I solved it by putting a thin bead of clear silicone caulking under the edge of the side weatherstrips.

RTV under the seal worked for me and is invisible.

I just noticed this same noise last weekend when driving around 70 mph. I do have a bug deflector on the front of the hood. The black side moldings on my windshield seem to be pretty tight, and I was assuming the noise was coming from the rubber flaps that cover the hood hinges. Has anyone else had noise from those flaps?

I taped the flaps down and secured about everything I could inside and out of the truck before I hit on the side strips. Put some electrical tape down both and see if it goes away. If it doesn't fix it you can try taping those down, but I wouldn't start there.

Mine is comming from the rubber flaps that cover my hood hinges.
Haven't done anything about it. Was quiet before my bug/stone
deflector thingy.

It is the weather stripping around the windshield!!! Right after I had the dealer put on a bug guard it started to chatter. I took it back to the dealer and he put 3M double-sided sticky tape under the weather stripping and not another peep. I definitely recommend this remedy as it is a very clean one. Hope this helps........GMANhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

Looks like this issue is seriously dead but here's another poke. I could see my hinge flaps just flapping like crazy while driving down the highway so I 3M taped them down but the noise was still there. I suspect it is the trim on the top of the windshield specifically the portion that lays on top of the painted surface of the roof and here is why. Mine is all stretched-out and wavy from all the flapping and looks like 20-year old rubber. I cut my deflector down 1/2 inch in the middle and about 5/8 inch on the portions above the headlights. That helped quite a bit but with gusting winds or faster speeds the flapping begins again but at a lessor degree.

But, the next time the truck is in for wty work I'll enquire about the new seal.

Double check your Bug Deflector!!

My dad has a new Chevy SS truck and had an off brand bug deflector and it made those same noises, only at high speeds. The dealer said it's called the "Helicopter Effect" !!

He had to try 2-3 different big shields before he found one at a small shop who knew what he was talking about and gave him a bug shield by Lund that was ok.

So when we bought our Duramax this year, we went straight to the Lund bug shield and no problems!

Good Luck!
