i am a new diesel owner and some of you probably have seen some of my other basic questions that i have posted. Well here is another one. I have heard(rumors) that you should not turn on and off the diesels frequently like you can with gas engines. For example should i leave my truck running when i run into the bank for five minutes? or is it ok to turn it off and then restart it in five minutes? i am confused!

Diesels use very little fuel idling, so I recommend letting it run for short stops. I have a keyring that has two rings that can separate from each other. I have a truck key on each ring, so I can get out and lock the truck while it is running. I highly recommend letting it idle a while after coming off of the interstate or pulling a trailer, because the turbo needs to cool while having oil go through it, other wise you can ruin the bearings in the turbo from oil coking.

My dad (Diesel Mechanic) says that if its 15 minutes or less that you should just let it idle.
