I change my oil every 5K with Shell Rotella 15w-40 at a cost of around $1.80 a quart plus a NAPA filter at $10.00. I had a guy trying to sell me Amsoil at $5.30 a quart. Is it worth the cost? I plan on keeping the truck to around 100K. I now have 29 K with no problems.

I use amsoil and I am happy with it. You have to decide, but I would imagine that if you are getting rid of the truck @ 100K, then Rotella is just as good as Amsoil, and you will get other answers that state Rotella is just as good as Amsoil no matter when you get rid of the truck. It all depends on your comfort level.

Greg at Lubrication Specialists sells the AME 15W-40 for about $4.00(shipping incl) a quart when you buy two oil changes worth.
Still--twice as much as the Rotella.

IMO no synthetic oil is worth the cost for year round use. The only justification would be if you run extended drains with bypass filtration, live in colder climates or see temp extremes that will break down regular oil. IMO they lubricate no more than dino and will take you engine no further.

I agree with abear
The injectors will fail long before the engine block no matter which oil you run.

If you are going to keep your truck to only 100k run Delo 400 and save your money.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif

I usually get rid of my vechicles before 100K. I am not too worried about the motor but I usually need a change by then. I have been using regular motor oil in my vechicles for the last 40 years and have yet to have a engine problem. I drove a 1983 Chevy truck for 135K and the only problem I had was the starter and fly wheel wore each other out. I had kids in school and had to keep the truck.

I looked into Amsoil. Three times the cost, but only two and a
half times the milage over mineral oil. Lots o engines have gone
into high milage without synthetics.
I put Amsoil in both my truck and van. The van went in for warranty and had two cracked heads. With only a couple thou on the oil the dealer had to change it and I'm back to dino.
The truck had a leaky oil pan gasket. Luckily they only tightened up the bolts but I lost three quarts in the process. Cost wise my luck hasn't been too good. I went to Amsoil strictly for extended drain. You don't want to know how many miles are on my oil. I did change the filter once during the year. Even in MN I don't have a problem with 15W-40 year round.
I'm undecided if I'll stay with sythetic or go back. I too agree with abear's comment.
