: in search of PMD alternatives
steve-r 10-10-2004, 11:52 PM while some here are engaged in the valiant effort of reverse
engineering the OEM PMD with some cooling improvements , i wonder what
experience if any and opinions are out there about the SOL-D from
Remarq ?
have they already accomplished the noble pursuit?
first, for the record, i'm not affiliated.
site is at remarqtech dot com
i sent them an email asking about history, specs, how much testing,
where located, where manufactured, etc...didn't get a lot of answers,
but they did say they were based on Toronto, Ontario, Canada.,,,price
is $416 USD, and they offer a 5 year warranty.
there are a couple posts in other forums (TDP) positively referencing
them, but the experience appears very recent...ie nobody with a year
under their belt.
from the pics on their site, it looks very similar to the OEM PMD, so
can't tell whether there is really any different technology in it or
not, though they seem to say it is "new technology". one pic looks like
it has a heatsink on it already, though they say a separate "cooler' is
not required.
maybe one of the PMD guru's on here could contact their sales office,
ask them some tough probing questions, and provide some feedback on
whether this is worth considering further or just some scam.
the only method of contact appears to be email. they list no phone
numbers. i searched for 'remarq' in the canada411 search database and
got no hits, and they don't list an address or phone number. i have
sent another email requesting more info, and i'll post any response i
get. i also invited them to post here and introduce themselves as a
means of validation.
until then i'm not "SOL-D" yet.
Turbine Doc 10-11-2004, 03:48 AM Never heard one way or other on that product, several vendors with email only access have burned members here and at TDP, that is a lot of coin for FSD, without direct access and it fails in 5 years who do you call to get warranty service, will they still be in business then.
My .02 is go with one of the many vendors you can talk to in person and who have a legitimate reputation at stake, if they deliver poor service or shoddy product, a real business should have a phone #.
As far as impressive website $89 and you can buy web design software & make a pretty impressive site layout; I'm not saying don't buy these guys product; they may be starting out, and web is all they can afford rite now. But remember most start up businesses fail in 1st yr of business, so what good is a 5yr warranty then. just be careful with your money
Turbine Doc 10-11-2004, 03:58 AM Okay,
Went to the website, does indeed look like variant of a finned heatsink, similar to other products seen elsewhere, exception FSD is sandwiched between fins and another flat plate, can't zoom in for closer look of what you are buying, only one product listed in heading of Products.
Looks like annodized aluminum, which detracts from ability to transfer heat, can't tell from photos what mating surfaces is like. Free gift with purchse sounds intriguing.
Site does say some stuff still under construction, claims increased power with no change in fuel, and eliminates need for calibration resistor and no cooler, yet it sports a finned heat sink (cooler), plus it is mounted on intake where other coolers have failed multiple FSDs.
I'd give it a pass until their site is finished and you know someone with one that can provide some real data like here( http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11054) if it were my $$$, my buyer beware radar is pingingEdited by: Turbine Doc
Bobt250 10-11-2004, 07:51 AM My concern about the warranty is that there is already controversy (with GM....not here with us) about what's really wrong when the FSD starts acting up. In other words, there is already denial that the FSD is a problem. I wonder if the company referenced here would be in denial mode if you tried to make a warranty claim.
lupey6.5 10-11-2004, 09:19 AM 10 whole inches of harness! wow! think of all the relocation possibilities. yea take it out of the fire and hold it above it to toast it golden brown, get some gram crackers and some hershey bars and make fuel smores drivershttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif
quantum mechanic 10-11-2004, 01:27 PM What's the odds they're using the stanadyne driver with a bigger heatsink/wirng harness and calling it an improvement. Kinda short of the mark if you ask me.
steve-r 10-11-2004, 02:49 PM i emailed some questions to them:
-how long was the SOL-D in development?
-what kind of testing?
-how many are installed?
-how long in production?
-what is their experience in manufacturing solid state electronics?
-what is their experience with diesel/automotive applications?
-if the OEM PMD generates an average of 140-150F degrees of heat when
installed on the FSD cooler on the manifold, , then what is the SOL-D
average temp?
-without revealing anything proprietary, what technology have they improved over the OEM PMD to eliminate the problems?
-i tried the Paypal button but it didnt work
-in their previous email response, they said that as a payment
alternative i could send a money order, but they didnt provide an
address to mail it to
-i also tried to find them in the Canada411.com directory, but no hits
-so i challenged them on these points indicating that we need some
better answers before sending them money.......still waiting for a
response.
-my 'buyer beware' senses are tingling too
steve-r 10-11-2004, 07:57 PM Paypal button works now.
got an encouraging email response from RemarQ Tech.
parent company is Hexatronic -an electronics design firm
- cdn site is http://www.hexatronic-inc.com/index.html
also sites in Sweden & Finland if you google.
in business in Canada since 1998.

they claim the Sol-D is a complete redesign using Mosfet technology,
and that it runs 25C above ambient engine compartment temps, with less
than 50% of the dissipated power of the OEM PMD.
in development for a year, in production since July, and in the market since September....so still early
they are sending a test unit to TheDieselPage.com for testing.
apparently other US distributors are currently testing. wonder who they are...Kennedy? Heath?
hopefully we'll hear about some results soon.
i'm just getting my 7th pump/PMD installed under warranty. my 94 is in
fantastic shape otherwise and will probably run another 10 years if I
can just keep PMD's from frying. I sure hope this turns out to be
a credible solution.

steve-r 10-12-2004, 02:06 PM got an email back from Jim Bigley over at TDP and he confirms he has
been talking with RemarQ and that there are plans to test one of their
SOL-D units. i'm still waiting for results before parting with my $$
but i'm encouraged they seem more than just a scam website at this
point. stay tuned.
