Many of you have helped me with this project in the past and i'm indebt to you for the help. I am however at a new starting point. I am in possession of a very good running 6.2 engine. It is in a 1986 military blazer. It was a police cruiser for many years that didn't see much drive time except when i drove it back and forth from the academy over 9 years ago for four months. 6 hours on sunday and another 6 hour drive on friday night. It has set around pretty much since then maybe getting 5 to 7 thousand miles on it. anyhow it runs like it did 9 years ago. I want to put in it my 1993 chevy dually. The dually had a 6.5 turbo in it. I bought the truck with a bad motor and since then have purchased two 6.5's to replace. Both had cracked blocks. Can i make the swap with out changing anything to the 6.2? I want to run it as is (N/A). I can make some pods if need be. Can you guys help me out? Thanks Steve

You are asking a bunch of turbo junkines how to de tune a 6.5, out of our forum I say knave & seeker of lowered HP & torque expectations :D :D :D ,

Yes it can be done, if you feel like parting with any of your turbo stuff give us a shout in the 6.5 forum (probably some of the 6.2 guys would take the tubo stuff off your hands),

I'm going to move this to 6.2 forum area, a couple of expert 6.2 to 6.5 N/A to turbo conversion guys there that should give you the straight info to "neuter" your 6.5 into a 6.2, & going turboless.

You should be able to just bolt the 6.2 in and go but making the gauges work and getting the transmission to shift make take some creativity. Just remember that all a non-turbo mechanically injected 6.2 needs to run is 12V to the IP for the ignition, clean fuel to the IP, and a return line. I believe that truck has a 4L80E, however, so unless it came with a mechanical IP you will have to figure out how to make the transmission shift...

Yes my 93 6.5T had a mechanical IP. So i should be able to bolt and go with that, correct? How about the 4l80e tranny? What needs to be done about getting it to shift. Or do i even have to wory about it? Anything I should have to worry about? Thanks Steve

Since the truck had a mechanical IP you should be able to hook everything up the way it was before and it should work fine without any mods.

You might actually consider just running the turbo as well... If you don't run too much boost it will work fine on the 6.2. The 6.2 and 6.5 are virtually the same thing to begin with anyway. If you do that it would be really simple... Just pull everything off of the old motor, bolt it onto the new one, hook everything up and go...

I plan on hooking up the turbo, but that will be down the road. I wanna put the turbo on after I run the 6.2 as a N/A set up. Getting the engine to run as an N/A will be easier. Once I know it is good to go I would then like to set it up with the turbo.

Hey,

If you need any help, let me know, I just built up a 6.2l for my 1998 2500 6.5td. My has the crank position sensor, so i had to pull the timing stuff off, and change out the sprockets, since the 6.5l crank timing sprocket has the magnetic gear. You will probably have to change out the front timing cover too. If you are gonna run the turbo, get the high output water pump to keep that block cool. You might also want to think of swaping in your 6.5l oil pump too, if your gonna run the turbo. Bigger cooler lines also. And eventually an intercooler. For mine i got brand new pistons, rings, glow plugs, and injectors. Might as well do it now and be done with it. If you are gonna run the turbo, put your 6.5l heads on that motor, and your gonna need an oil feed line. You can tap it from your oil cooler or get an oil filter relocation kit, and tap it from there.

I may need to give you a call for some of that expertise you have. Got a number I can give you a call at? If thats ok send it to my email at bullwest@frontiernet.net. I wanna try to get this done shortly, next couple of weeks. Got a bunch of questions for you if that is ok, you brought up more questions. i'm not an expert on these engines, well for that matter far from an expert on much of anything.

If you did have an electronic automatic its not hard to adapt the electonic pedal to work with a man. pump. Sounds like ur ok though bolt her together and go. I put a man pump in a 94 6.5 w/auto worked fine. Rolled truck and put motor into a 90 tonner. all gauges work fine. id put the turbo on before i put motor in though. lot easier when the motor is already out.
