: Tuner and Dealers Tech II
mcbride 10-10-2004, 06:39 PM I just want to know the real skinny ... I have been told, and have read, that if you use a tuner (Hypertech, Quad, etc.) that even if you revert back to the stock factory tune, that the dealer can tell that there was "something" else in the PCM when the Tech II is connected up. So my friendly GM Tech II Technicians, is this true or is it an Urban Legend?
Thanks.
jpekarek 10-10-2004, 08:11 PM I strongly believe it is actually true. Not from personal experience though.
I would be interested in knowing the real deal also.
Mackin 10-10-2004, 08:52 PM With the Tech II I don't believe it is possible. The only thing I believe that they could see with the Tech II is stored failure data of out of range parameters.
This could led to questions if a repair was made and repeated.
But then again I haven't really dug into mine ,yet.

dmaxalliTech 10-10-2004, 10:13 PM urban legend
if it aint there, i cant see it
if it is there (tuner) i likely cant see it
I have looked high and low for it and have yet to find data differences that are suspect

Do you know if I get the latest download from GM, will I be able to put my Hpertech or any other programer back in afterwords? Or is it incompatible due to the fact my/our programer was written before the GM upgrade?

Well, I'm not a super tech, but the Hypertech site does caution about having you computer flashed without returning it back to stock. The flash will overwrite the hypertech tuning and you will not be able to use it anymore. They did not specifically state anything about various flash levels.
Hope this helps.

Yep, I am aware of that. I am more curious as to if you can reload it after the flash and it work then. If all the handheld programmers were wrote around the old GM version of software, we may have a problem when tying to reinstall a older version per-say from our perhaps outdated programmers.

Mackin 10-11-2004, 06:40 AM If you bring it into the dealer with the program loaded then I believe the Tuner will become useless.
Also you might lose the GM reflash if the tuner when returning to stock doesn't over write the stock tune reserved on the Programmer.
I would believe the Quad you would be safe but not so sure on the Vin locker ones.I know with the Predator there is always a copy of the stock tune in the tool.
Otherwise the Tune will work as previous with or without a GM flash.

cwq21 10-13-2004, 08:33 AM I have a Hypertech and everytime I bring it in I restore factory programming and when they are done I reinstall the Hypertech programming and have never had any issues. Onced the dealer even replaced my computer and reflashed it. The Hypertech still did fine.
Jumper357 10-18-2004, 01:16 AM But, have you had any GM reflash upgrades done yet? The question is; after the upgrade can you reinstall the Hypertech? I'm thinking Hpertechs program was written around the original GM software, it seems to me I saw here somewhere in this form that, if you do the reflash Hypertech becomes useless do to that fact.

cwq21 10-18-2004, 07:18 AM Yes I have had several reflashes done at the dealer. I remove my programming anytime before bringing it in for anything. It didn't cause any problems. I just reinstall the Hypertech programming when I get back home. I don't think the Hypertech changes everything in the programming, just the things it needs so that it can "boost" it up a little.
To answer your question, I have not had any problems. Mine seems to work fine. BTW, I leave mine set on #2 (70hp) all of the time. I've ran #3 a couple of times, but i don't see enough of a difference and I don't want to limp my ali. I do a fair amount of towing and @ #2 I feel like I'm in the safe zone. I know that one day I will have to have upgrades done, and I'll do them myself, but until then I'll just enjoy.
cwq21 10-18-2004, 07:32 AM Oh, I forgot to mention. On mine if I had anything happened that should have thrown a code and I remove my programming, the dealer couldn't find the code. It was like it reset the trouble code or something. I learned to remove the programming and let it "happen" before I would bring it in and then they could get the code. Edited by: cwq21
Jumper357 10-19-2004, 12:06 AM You are the Man, thanks for getting back to me. I've asked this question several times on this forum, and it was like nobody saw it.
Why would you have to have upgrades done later? I assume youre talking the tran? You expect it to go bad? What mileage would one start to see issue's? I realize it depends on the driver and towing and etc. or does it?
I drive about 44,000 miles a year, and for the most part no more than 400 to 800 lb's payload in it, plus tool box and some tools.
Thanks, Jumper 357
cwq21 10-21-2004, 07:58 AM I'm not expecting any problems, but I would like to make more mods later on. exhaust, juice, ect. and my thinking is the more upgrades you make the stronger everything else down the line needs to be.
