: Anyone used "Dr. ColorChip"?
Siphon 06-01-2007, 01:54 PM Wondering if anyone has had experience with a product called "Dr. ColorChip." www.drcolorchip.com (http://www.drcolorchip.com)
Looks to me like some kind of single-stage touch-up paint with a bottle of laquer thinner to remove the 'overspray'. The testimonials and results pics are decent, though. I'm going to tackle my paint's road rash one of these days and would do almost anything to save myself the hassle of the 'razor blade method' on all those little specs.

I looked at the photos and it is really hard to tell. It looks almost too good to be true as far as I am concerned. If it were me, I would sand it down and repaint it myself, or take it to a body shop for a professional repair. Every time I have used touch up paint in the past, I have always been disappointed in the end result. Maybe it's just me, I don't know.
If you try it, post some pictures.
Good Luck!
Siphon 06-05-2007, 11:18 AM I guess for $60, I should just give it a try. There really isn't anything to lose, since if it turns out badly I can just sand and repaint anyway.

Siphon 08-20-2007, 12:14 PM OK, well I bought some and applied it to my road rash & chips last weekend. The transaction was fine, shipped quickly, and the color matched pretty well. Overall, it's a better option than regular touch-up paint, but you shouldn't be under any delusions that it's a substitute for a professional paint job. There is a reason the photos on the website are taken from a frontal angle only. My truck looks better, for sure, but the stuff is not magical paint from outer space that fills in all scratches and chips for a "smooth" appearance.
1. I found the product real effective for taking care of areas that have lots of small road rash chips. It is best to just smear a thin coat of it over these areas with a rag. The product effectively takes away that dullness that comes from lots of small chips.
2. However, for any chip larger than the head of a pin, the stuff is probably going to disappoint you. I'd say between five or six applications would be necessary to completely fill in one chip and bring it up to the level of the surrounding clear coat. I did not find that it worked very well on scratches, either. Again, multiple applications would be necessary. In this respect I wouldn't say the product is any better than regular touch-up paint. In fact, for "larger" chips the instructions say to just paint the area and leave it, which is no different than touch-up.
VERDICT: Would I buy it again? ...mmm, not sure right now. I want to wait and see how it holds up to washing, polishing, and waxing. If all the tiny microscopic road rash chips that were supposed to have been filled-in and blended out just get full of wax residue I'll be right back where I started.
Before/after photos to follow.
Siphon 08-20-2007, 02:00 PM Mixture of "small" (size of pencil tip) and "large" (size of pin head) chips I had on the leading edge of the hood, front & rear fender flares, and one scratch on the bed side I wanted to fill.
Siphon 08-20-2007, 02:18 PM Like I said, it looks better from a straight-on angle. The "small" chips are filled in pretty effectively, the "larger" ones, not so much. On the hood, I went over the large chips three times, and they're still perhaps only halfway filled-in. #4 is taken from a different angle in than the 'before' pic, just trying to get the right lighting. The dark blob is one chip I forgot to remove the excess paint from. Note the improvement in #7, not only right on the fender flare, but down on the groove in the rocker panel where the smaller chips were. RE the scratch in #5, allegedly the paint gains gloss as it cures, so maybe this will turn out looking better than it does right now...Maybe not. I went over that one three times also.
