How long should the turbo last on a 1996 6.5?

You can check the turbo's wear by moving it back and forth, up and down. If it has excessive travel, that is it's rear sloppy, time for new bushings. they can last as long as the bushings do.

My turbo on my '94 is now 10 years old and works as good as new. Turbo life can certainly be extended with proper precautions, regular oil changes with proper grade of oil, idling the vehicle for a minute or two when you first start is and idling a few minutes before you shut it off to allow the turbine to slow and reduce the spin down time when the engine and oil flow stops. Regular air filter changes will help too, a dirty air filter will require the turbo to work harder to produce the same boost.
