I am looking at an Excel fifth wheel trailer. My truck is 93 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive, 5 speed 6.5 diesel. My gross vehicle weight is 8600 lbs, rear axle is 600 lbs. I figure about an additional 400lbs in the truck. What else do I need to know on how to figure what my tow capacity of this truck is?http://excelrvs.com/floorplans/popups/rt_32FSE.htm

Tow weight is not the problem...the empty pin weight is 2430, when you add 500 to make it a realistic pw, you'll be way overweight. Even your F250 would be over weight. The F250 will have a sticker on the left REAR door or door pillar called Tire and Loading Information. It will have your cargo capacity there. With the 06 over weight, the 93 will be WAY over weight. You need less trailer or more truck.

That what I figure, but you know salesmen, trying to sell you the biggest thing they have, and saying it will be no problem for your trruck!

I hear you.

Truck salesmen really confuse me. I went to my guy, told him I was going to buy another truck from him...GM discount, bought my last truck from him. So why does he try to sell me a little 3/4 ton D/A, that will be 1000 lbs over weight??? Why not sell me what I need to haul my heavy 5er??? He has nothing to gain by selling me the wrong truck, why not sell me the right truck? I always order them the way I want them, so I was not going to buy what was on the lot anyway.

With any configuration you need to find out the empty weight of your truck then look at the numbers for your truck. My guess is that your truck empty weight is probably around 6500 lbs. You gotta weight it to know exactly where you are. When you weigh in record front and rear axles seperate.

8600 - (total truck weight+ hitch weitht) is max for trailer pin weight

Something else to consider is the GCVW. If your truck is maxed 8600 and if your close to max on trailer loading at 15000, your total is now 23600. That's close to dmax/allison numbers. I think the old series were only around 20000lbs combined.

I agree with old solder either bigger truck or smaller trailer is necessary. Once the trailers get longer than 30-32 ft you really want to have the extra rubber of a dually for better side load control from wind and such. Pin weights above 2100-2200 pretty much should be looking at dually.

Good luck with the quest
