Has anyone ever ran out of gas and then had problems getting their
truck started again? I ran out of gas the other night and now my
truck won't start. I'm pretty sure I've purged most of the air
out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

_Jason_

From what I have heard, there is a prime somewere in the engine compartment. My roomates dad ran out of gas in his and had to have it towed to the dealership for some guy to come out and push on a little rubber button thingy and then it started just fine.

Yeah, ontop of the fuel filter right? I have primed it using the pump on the fuel filter but still, no luck.

all kidding aside, did you crack the air bleeder next to the pump and then pump it to get the air out?

Uh spaf, man you ain't supposed to run out of diesel. It's a royal pain in the ass, as you are finding out! Your owners manual has info on what to do as well. Should I ask why your low fuel "idiot light" didn't come on, or was it? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif Hope you had nice weather and a good pair of walking shoes. Yeah, I know... I pushed my luck...

I've gone through the procedure in the owners manual but still no
luck. I've bled the hell out of it and there appears to be no air
left...

Just out of curiosity, how many miles did you get after the light came on? Would be nice to know for future reference.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

You have got to prime it till your fingers bleed, then do it some
more, then and only then will it start.Edited by: Kendall69

I've gone through the process 6-7 times, letting a lot fuel out each
time... Should I just keep trying to start it, then prime, repeat
until it starts?

Thanks,

You got to get all that air out buddy, so prime the hell out of it and keep on bleeding it until it can pick up the fuel and not an air pocket, an old trick we use to do was to remove the fuel filter and fill it up with fuel and screw it back on then turn it over, you would need to do it a couple time to draw all the air out of the fuel lines until it would prime itself and draw all fuel, and no air was left in the lines or filter.

spaf,

In bleeding the filter, are you getting fuel all over the place? Once you get your truck to start, for future reference, go to the Vendor Forum section. Check out the post for the fuel filter bleeder kit being sold by LanduytG. (Im not a vendor, so dont assume Im peddling product.) In anticipation of putting the Racor pre OEM fuel filter, I contacted Greg and ordered one of those bleeders. Works like a champ. I was lucky to never have to clean up fuel because I got this. The bleeder hose goes thru the hole on the passenger side of the wheel well liner. I put an empty Aquafina water bottle on top of the Aframe with the bleeder hose in the bottle. Whala! fuel goes into the bottle and no mess to fill up. After Im done, I flick the plastic bleeder hose until all the fuel is drained out and Im done.

Hope this is a helpful hint for the future.

Best of luck to you in getting your truck running!

So spaf, are you ever going to run out of diesel again? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif My wife almost ran out last week on I-10 with our 5ver in tow. Appears we dodged a bullet on that trip. Hope by now you and back up and running! JJ http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

I have ran mine down real low a couple times while in town. Trying to get a feel for the fuel gauge so when I am on a long trip I know how far I can push it if I have to. So far I have put 24 gallons in a 26 gallon tank and have yet to see the idiot light. Getting the idiot light then running out in 2 miles, a little scary. I am going to stick that at the back of my brain for future reference.

My low fuel light has come on twice on my new 04 duramax CC short box. Both times I was near a gas station, fueled up immediately and put in 21 gallons. At least on mine it looks like I have 3+ gallons left when the light comes on. On a gasser I'd push it to see how far I could go, don't want to try that with a diesel. I just wish the standard tank on the short box was 35 gallons or so. The 26 is just on the small size for my needs.

Ok, well there was one week were I was starving and payday was tommorrow. After I got paid, the light had been on since the previous nights trip home, only a mile or so. Well now that I have money to I go into traffic and pay 2.25/gallon or do I take the back road to the other side of town and pay 2.03/gallon at safeway. Well I went for safeway, thought it was like 10-15 miles away, turns out it about 36, so after sweating off 10lbs I arrived and managed to squeeze 27(26.9something) gallons in that 26 gallon tank. Good to know Ive got at least 40 miles when that light comes on, but its a much more comfortable drive, when its full.

Last year I was on the Blue Ridge Pkwy with my TT and belatedly found out the fuel stops on Pkwy had no diesel.

The Pkwy has mileposts similar to interstate and my map showed an exit close to an interstate interchange that I figured had diesel. DIC indicated in range that it should be about a dead heat!

When I got to truck stop, DIC indicated 8 mile range, and it took 25.8 gals to fill! Sort of close, but it does give me something to figure from.

Hope to soon buy/build an in bed under toolbox auxilary tank.

Yes they make nice looking stuff and it is high qualtiy but their factory replacement tanks don't work worth a crap.

I had one on my LB7 and it left me stranded about a dozen times. The tank is so long it needs a minimum of 10 gals to keep from sucking air. Also the diesel sloshes around so much it would suck air on accelerating and stopping long before the fuel light came on.

My average useable capacity was about 10-12 gals less than advertised capacity. In reality I paid all that money to get an extra 9 gals of useable fuel. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley6.gif

i ran out of fuel and it said to bleed then keep it cranking it over untill it starts. i cranked until the batterys went dead. got a jump tryed some more then she fired right up. it just takes time. i primed mine about 3-4 times. just keep cranking she will come around http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

Wouldn't that be bad for the engine? I mean cranking the whole
time without oil pressure? Isn't it just easier to hit the pime
button a few dozen times? I just got done installing (finally)
the Nicktane kit a couple days ago (essentially running it out of
fuel). I primed it maybe 50 times before I got solid fuel.
I started it again, and it died, so I primed it again another 10 times
or so and I haven't had to do it since. I'd much rather wear out
my thumb than my engine.

Reminds me of my fuel injected harley, there is no reserve, and once the light comes on it too late! I will keep fuel in this dmax!
