: Code 78 was bump at 70

finally got the codes pulled after experiencing a bump and off and on service engine light.
It came up 78. The scanner said something about Turbo waste gate malfuncion.

It seems to be running okay except for the occassional bump or miss but the light does come on at lower speeds now,

Anyone have this before?

Yes,

It indicates your getting less boost than you should. Check turbo actuator while running, should be ~15" and if you follow the vacuum line backk to the solenoid and check before the solenoid, should be ~25".

What do you mean by "running" ? is that at idle? Do you mean 15 inches of vacuum? Where is this located. Have a diagram?

Yes, at idle and " of vacuum.

This is the vacuum pump.

From the driverside, this is the wg solenoid on the valvecover. The orange line is from the vac pump and the black goes to the turbo actuator. Nevermind the pine needles.

This is the turbo actuator. The vac line is on the other side.

gReat Pictures, very hlepful.
I talked woith Bill Heath today and am going to switch to his mechanical waste gate controller. It apparently operates like the gate on my Mercedes and that thing never gives anyone a bit of trouble.
Thanks,
Chris

Ok,

Are you going to remove the vac pump and run the 2" shorter belt?

I'll pull it off for the pump and solenoid and fool the PCM to keep the SES light from coming on everytime you boost over 10 psi if ya interested. What are you going to do with the vac actuator?Edited by: quantum mechanic

Haven't decided yet what to do about the belt. I just put a new one on a couple months ago.

According to Bill, pump failures are pretty uncommon, and I don't plan to turn up the boost above factory spec anyway, so there should be no issue about the PCM throwing a light, don't ya think?

Wait and see. Do you have boost and pyro guages? It's a good way to monitor what your set at.

You should only get a code with a TM if you dial up boost too far, if you do; a boost fooler will keep the code from setting.

Boost Gauge really needed to help setup that TM too so you don't throw a code and get a SES light.

Just so ya'll know. This is my wife's suburban. Sort of the soccer mom thing.

I seldom drive it unless there is a problem. or I need to change the oil.

Then you will want to be real careful about too much TM boost, my wife refuses almost to drive her soccer mom ride minivan, it is wimpy compared to her TDI New Beetle, and is now asking if I can get it to go faster like all the stuff I did to my truck. Power is addictive even in wymin http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif, before she got her bug always asking me why am I always under the hood, I don't even understand why you need a turbo truck and mods, you got plenty of power in that big ole truck already. My how things change.

eppoh,

I don't sappose you're going to open the exhaust either? I understand but then I don't. I have two truck's the one in the avatar is my wife's. I didn't touch it, modification wise, untill I starting driving it. Now that I've seen what a beast this truck is, I wish, I'd done it sooner.

The exhaust should pay for itself in fuel before long if you go 4" and the sound can be heard on "I am chevy hear me roar" On of Canadian riggers posts.

I have looked at the exhaust mods with the idea of opeing it up and the intake. But, there is a good chance that in the next year I will sell the burban and we are thinking about a VW Toureg (diesel).
I would not recover the cost of the exhaust mods.

On the Toureg if your wife can drive stick, get that over the auto tranny an extra 5-10 mpg with it, my wife is getting 40-50 mpg on her TDI if it was stick it would get better mpg, which is another reason she bitches about driving the 19-26mpg Villager gasser.

Is that TDI an auto or stick? I was told by a new beetle driver that to get to the tranny filter ( screen) on the auto, the engine had to be dropped. The dealer told me yeah, but it is a life time filter http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley3.gif

No I dont think the engine has to be dropped, but possibly ain't nothing under the hood mechanic friendly, Timing belt MUST be changed every 40 K, $600 bill at dealers, I bought the tools to do it myself, cost about $300 for tools but saved 100 over dealer on 1st go, next time it will just be belt.
