: Oil Changes
Bradbub 10-07-2004, 01:47 PM How does everyone feel about changing oil every 5000. I have been changing every 3000, but the price of diesel is cutting into my budget. I am real anal with my $40,000 truck and need it to last!!!
I would just like other opinions.
Thankshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif
deadfurrow 10-07-2004, 02:22 PM Invest ~$20.00 in a Universal Oil Analysis. Then there won't be any doubt in your mind.
On my last UOA with Delvac 1300 15w-40 with 8,000+ miles on the oil, my report said, "The TBN read 9.3, a high reading showing plenty of active additive remaining in the used oil. This oil could have stayed in use longer. Try running 9,000 miles next sample."
But, as always, your results may vary. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley24.gif
mightyvh 10-07-2004, 02:40 PM I've changed mine also at 3mo. 3000-4000 mi. I did this on my old chevy gasser and had 250,000 on it when I sold it - still running good. I have continued to do so on my Dmax out of habit although I know several who do the analysis and get more. I don't have an oil by pass filter yet and wonder about all that soot in the oil. After I install the by pass I probably will strech out the change period....I never though about the analysis to much until I saw someone post there results. Diesel in oil was one of the markers. Made me give it more thought - with the injector issue you might be able to see something starting before it went to far Edited by: mightyvh
Ace_of_Chaos 10-07-2004, 02:48 PM I change oil & filter every 5k miles, fuel filter every 10k miles, and spin-on tranny filter every 20k miles. This makes things very easy to remember and keep up with. Probably overkill, but it works for me !http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif
Question : How many times a year do you guys send oil samples, and does it cost you $20 every time you send one ?
gearhead 10-07-2004, 03:16 PM I have yet to get any soot in my oil with 5000 mi. oil changes
JohnnyO 10-07-2004, 04:28 PM 8000-9000 mile oil changes here. I had an analysis done at the first 8K oil change and it came back with plenty of life left in the oil.
TBN was 10, all the original oil additives were hardly depleted and the soot level was low.
It indicates that I can go a lot more on the oil but I am just not comfortable with going much more.
It's also a convienince thing for me. I like to run 15W-40 during the warm weather and 5W-40 during the cold. For me that comes to 1 oil change in the spring and 1 oil change in the fall.
Change mine every 10,000 Km's (6,250 miles)
I am changing oil and filter every 6000 to 7000 miles, but I mostly run on the open road, long daily mileages.
Stoner 10-07-2004, 06:34 PM Fresh Delvac 1 & filter every 10,000 miles.....TBN is 10.2http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif
will w 10-07-2004, 11:25 PM been changing mine every 5000 using delo 400. anyone had an analysis done with this oil? wil
JEBar 10-08-2004, 06:31 AM 76,000+ mile on our '02 ... Rotella-T 15W40 & filter changed roughly every 5,000 miles ... have never had to add any between changes .. fuel filter changed every 15,000 but I have one of John Kennedy's post OEM Mega's and don't worry much about the OEM filter

bearnc1 10-08-2004, 08:39 AM I change mine every 5,000 oil and filter. I get my filter at NAPA and oil from Walmart. It not that expensive and I hope the truck will last longer. I now have 28,000 and it a year and half old. I am going to have the tranny flushed in a couple of weeks. I changed the transmission filer at 5,000 as I heard from a Allison mechanic that it should be done.

Rockin 10-08-2004, 09:28 AM I try to get mine to the dealer every 3000 miles. I paid up front for oil changes for life. ($640) I figure every 3000 miles keeps the oild very fresh. I think so far this year, I have 31,500 miles and 8 oil changes. That puts me at $80 a change. I likely won't do as many miles next year, maybe 25,000 but say I do another 7 changes; I'll be down to $43. After that, they will probably lose money on me.
Duramax Dually 10-08-2004, 03:55 PM I change my oil every 10K miles. No analysis. I use Redline and from endless data supplied by others 10-12K miles is the norm. I change oil filters at 5K. I am religious about it. To date do not use any oil, truck has not been to dealer for any issues and I am nearing 100K miles now. My trek to 100K has slowed considerably. No more racing and no more hauling. Truck gets a 22 mile round trip drive back and forth to work with no traffic. Kind of boring......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif

Here's an one from my second oil change which was with Delo 400. They (Blackstone Labs) said the copper and tin was high because it was a new engine.
