Has anyone tried using Acetone to improve your MPG? Acetone to increase mileage (http://www.pureenergysystems.com/news/2005/03/17/6900069_Acetone/) I saw this on the news tonight. Im thinking of trying this.

Yes, there is lots to read about it on the net. Claims to eliminate black smoke too and improve efficiency of all engines. My dad runs it in his accura and sees good results. I have yet to try it.

Yeah It's BS!
Adding Acetone DOES NOT give you 10% to 30% increase in MPG.
At least not for a 93' Honda Prelude, which I'm willing to experiment with....not my truck.
See table for two regular fillups and one with Acetone. Gas used during similar average daily temperature intervals for consitency and same comuter loop:

06/27/05 72.7F(ave) 29.5mpg Reg
08/06/05 72.9F(ave) 30.5mpg Reg
06/26/06 73.47F(ave) 31.5mpg Acetone(1.5oz/10gal)

This is NOT even enough to justify the addition of Acetone (needed to see 33.1mpg just for added cost per gallon).
Also I had A/C off just about the whole time and I can't say that for previous intervals.

I wouldn't do that to a ford! Most of us want to add lubricity to our fuel, not take it out! Just use a real fuel additive and kill two birds with one stone. increased (slightly) mpg and lubricates your fuel system. probably costs about the same too.

All I will say is..it works..about a 2.5 percent mileage increase plus use 1 oz.
of the 2 stroke oil per gallon.:thumb:l

I'd be very careful. I work with acetone quite a bit at work, and it will eat up most thermoplastics. Like a keyboard & mouse, the paint off of a storage cabinet, my watch....

There's no telling what it would do to fuel lines, internal parts of the fuel filter, etc.;)

Not worth the risk of damaging the fuel system. And WTF is a 2.5% increase, give us real numbers if you have really tried it!!!

example: If you're getting 18mpg, a 2.5% increase would result in 18.45mpg.

Doesn't sound worth it, you could probably save that much by airing up your tires a little more.

There may be a detrimental effect of the acetone with elastomers (seals) throughout the fuel system. Probably not worth the risk involved.

Is the 93 Prelude a diesel?

No

Oh yea a 2.5% increase boy that is something to write home about I could get that if I slowed down 2 MPH.;)

I'm not putting fingernail polish remover in my truck!!!! I, like Eric, have worked with the stuff for 30 years and what it does to some plastics is scary.

Absolutly no way will I put it in. Anyone that does it be pre-warned. There's plenty of good additives on the market if you need a little extra.
