: Whose running dual alternators?
GMC2500HD 10-06-2004, 11:35 PM Are any of you running twins? If so why did you do it? I am planning on installing a brush guard with some extra lights and just wanted to know if the extra power is needed. Nothing serious just a few added KC's up front... Thanks
vegasdude 10-07-2004, 11:18 AM I am running them..........It came that way. The only thing I can really say about having two alternators is they look really cool!!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
gearhead 10-07-2004, 12:17 PM would they help with a plow?
ratlover 10-07-2004, 03:39 PM I run a single and plow. Lotsa power accessories, com radio, defroster, heater, headlights, radio with a seperate amp, aux reverse lights, a lightbar that draws enough amperage to weld withhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif, wipers, ect. Never had a problem. Although i do mostly comercial going forward and I do a good job of keeping my revs fairly highhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif
Its on the list of mods I want to do though.....eventualy, eventually. Would want to use GM stuff, wonder how much it would cost to switch over???
jcummins 10-07-2004, 04:39 PM Does having two alternators have an impact on fuel mileage?
Horse Trainer 10-07-2004, 06:01 PM I run 2 - the factory in the #1 slot, and a 200 amp Powermaster that I already had in the #2. It helps me when jump starting my JD 4420 on a zero degree day. Also, my truck is almost 3 years old, and I have never replaced a bulb - I think the constant voltage is responsible for that. The big reason I went to the second though, is that I might be idling for long periods while loading and unloading horses, with all the lights (interior and exterior) on, heater or A/C running.
Diesel Dragon 10-07-2004, 06:54 PM Put a 200 amp Powermaster in the second spot. Mostly to help with the plowing. Using plow pump at idle use's a lot of juice and I got tired of seeing the lights dim.
Since install I don't have any problems with light's which always stay bright.
Plus at start up on those cold mornings my voltage dosent hang at 10 volts for 30 seconds like it used to, now it's straight up to 14 volt's

Diesel Power 10-07-2004, 07:45 PM i run two as my truck came that way... i have the good odl belt squeak on shutdown, but its always been there.. i still manage to blow headlight bulbs every so often tho...
RonJT 10-07-2004, 08:12 PM Horse trainer/Diesel Dragon,
Do you have a part number for the Powermaster and the new serpentine belt number? Any special wire harness?
Thanks
a64pilot 10-08-2004, 07:34 AM Does having two alternators have an impact on fuel mileage?
It would hurt, but probably not much at all. Quite a bit less than running the A/C for example.
Horse Trainer 10-08-2004, 09:58 AM I'll look and find the numbers. There are two wires to add. Seems like I have seen a parts list and instructions somewhere - I'll look on my other computer.
jcummins 10-08-2004, 11:51 AM Has anybody used alternators from here?

a64pilot 10-08-2004, 12:04 PM Pretty sure Eric, dmaxallitech sells a kit with everything you need with instructions. Haven't bought one myself, But I think I saw that on his web sight. Edited by: a64pilot
Horse Trainer 10-08-2004, 02:05 PM A64 - I think you are right. RonJT - I put mine together from pieces, and buying the kit would have been a lot easier - contact Eric! I'll find the Powermaster number.
Diesel Dragon 10-08-2004, 02:33 PM I don't have the numbers off hand but you can go to Powermaster's web site and get their phone # and give them a call for the proper part # and also the electrical connector that plugs into the back of the alternator.
There was a how to article written by Hoot I believe on all the parts involved to add a second but now I can't find it when I do a search. DP any ideas what happened to it?
Any way you need to get the right bracket and bolts that holds the second alternator, the new extra idler pully and bolt, plus the longer serpintine belt.
The alternator get's wired into the computer to turn it on and off, same wiring procedure as the high idle install. Plus you need to run a new heavy guage wire from alternator to the junction block. And I put a 200 amp fuse inline just in case.
I think I paid about $350 for the alternator and wiring harness at a truck web site selling Powermaster product's. Shop around as prices vary widely.
The bracket's, pully, bolts, and belt were about $100 from GM parts direct.
The how to article had all the part numbers spelled out but like I said I can't find it now, sorry.
All in all it was an easy install, the wiring took more time than anything else.
Also I think Hoot put 2 - 200 amp powermaster's in his but he had to do some modification to a heater hose that's behind the Factory alternator in the 1st spot. But he made it work.
Good Luck &a mp;a mp;n bsp; &a mp;a mp;n bsp; &a mp;a mp;n bsp; Diesel Dragon
PS What's this "&n bsp;" that keeps popping up in my post's after I post them? I didn't write it.
And now it's changed to "&a mp;n bsp;" too funny

Terry 10-09-2004, 12:16 PM I'll look and find the numbers. There are two wires to add. Seems like I have seen a parts list and instructions somewhere - I'll look on my other computer.
I've got the OEM parts numbers listed on my site
HERE (http://207.53.239.181/~terry/truck/dual-alt/)
As for instructions? Hehh - yeah right. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

Diesel Dragon 10-09-2004, 08:42 PM Found the Powermaster part # for the alternator it's
# 48202 Natural Finish Hi-Amp Alternator Delco CS-144
12V output: Max/Idle: 200/125 Amp
Terry's site has all the part#'s for the little part's. (Nice job Terry)
I just put a Heavier guage wire from the alternator to the junction block because of the increased Amperage, and you need a Powermaster connector instead of the GM one.
Good Luck______________ Diesel Dragon

Doe's the power master come in a direct replacement for the single , Mine is a 105 amp and would like to have a bigger one for the camper.
GMC2500HD 10-09-2004, 11:27 PM Thanks for the info guys. I will be looking into it...
Diesel Dragon 10-10-2004, 04:47 PM Hi Geno
Powermaster says their alternator is a direct replacement.
By looking at the 2 it looks like the powermaster is a little larger diamater and at the rear there is a 1" diameter bearing support that stick's out about a half inch from the case. The mounting holes are the same so it will bolt right into the factory bracket's, you may just need to push some of the wiring out of the way that run's by the alternator. That side of the engine is awfully crowded.
I think I read that some one did install one on that side but they had to move one of the small diamater water hose's that ran behind it.
Give it a shot if it dosen't work then just add it to the second spot.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif
Good Luck
Diesel Dragon
Horse Trainer 10-10-2004, 07:12 PM I think DD is correct about clearance problems in the #1 slot - I believe that is why I don't have 2.
