I had been discussing with the dealer about changing my injectors, but changed my mind and told them not to change them. I wanted to wait until they just had to be replaced. Well the truck was in the shop for a driveline problem and the dealer decided to go ahead and change the injectors. What would you do?

Let it be.

Your truck is still covered up to 200,000 miles/7 years for injectors, even if they have already been replaced.

Thank them for getting the injectors replaced in a quick and timely matter. They should be under warranty still. How many miles. You should be under the 7yr 200k warranty.

I know, but I was going to discuss having them replace the glow plugs while they were in there when I was ready to have it done.

I dont recall anyone replacing glow plugs as preventative maintenance on these trucks. I dont think I have ever head of anyone having glow plug issues either.

Glow plugs are done from outside the valve cover area so it's not really a big deal to do them at the same time as injectors or after injectors have already been done.

Not that I am getting paranoid, but the truck has been in the shop 3 times for driveline problem. Which leads me to my next suspicion. I think they proceeded to change the injectors to cover the multiple problems with the driveline.
Also, How can I tell if the injectors were for sure really replaced?

There should be signs of a lot of the top end of the engine coming apart.

Fenter,
What was the truck doing before that had you discussing replacing your injectors with the dealer? Is this same problem still happening? What is the driveline work that the truck keeps going into the shop for?

The truck driveline problem is a out of balance drive shaft. The first time in I told the service writer the problem(shudder) was with the driveline not the engine, as it was running smooth. When I picked up the truck the mechanic told me he was looking under the hood and didn't have any info regarding driveline. I asked them to inspect it anyway. They charged warranty $120.00 to check the driveline, no problem found. After a few weeks, the shudder turned into a sound like a traffic cops whistle that would come and go but really bad at 40-45. Took it back and the dealer replaced the front u joint and carrier bearing (he said they were falling apart). Drove it in town and it felt rough but when on the road it shuddered very hard at 70+. This is 3rd trip in and now they replaced drive shafts and u joints. I am getting ready to go get it.
The discussion about injectors was brought up by the dealer during vist 2. He reminded me that they are under warranty. I have lost some mileage performance, but still runs pretty good. At first said yes, but after hearing the replacement stories about unreliable injectors, I informed the service writer and service manager that I did not want to do the injector change. This was when I brought it in for driveline fix #3.
They have been waiting 3 days for parts so the service writer said he forgot about the discussion and did not talk to the service manager but went ahead and changed the injectors (supposedly).

Do you have an aftermarket warranty on the truck?

Look at the lines that go to the injectors in the middle of the valvecovers, you should se signs of them being removed if they really changed the injectors as they have to come off and be put back on.

ask for a vin check in the proper fourm,i think its called "vin check"!! also thank them as they do it for free for the members here, thanks again, you guys that do it.then again the dealership could have billed gm for warrenty work not done.this is probably not the case.maybe they want you happy so you buy another some day.look for bolt and nut heads on the valve covers and surrounding areas,
to see if there has been sockets or wrenches on them,it does leave a noticable mark, wheather its from cheap sockets or snapies they all leave some easy to read clue that someone has been there.
cheap sockets leave clean marks on the 8 corners.
snapon leaves markes on the flat portion of the 8 flat parts of the bolt or nut,"i have too much spare time";)

sorry i didn't read all of the post's.shuddering is a sign of bad injectors.maybe they were smart enough to realize they did not diagnose it right the first or second or third,i forget how many times you said you took it back.but injector replacement
is a plus even though they are not known to be a
new injector,or new design.

For the most part the unreliable injectors that were replaced was a batch back in 2003 early 2004.

The ones today seem to be doing ok, from the ones I have replaced.

They cant get away without changing the injectors because they have to be ordered by your vin number, then they have to be turned in for the cores. All the injectors are sent back for rebuild/inspection.

And do you really want to wait till you are driving around with a crankcase full of fuel and not oil? Most of the time people dont know until the fuel starts pushing the oil out of the motor and dripping on the ground. I think I would rather take the injectors now and not risk any possible damage.

The top end of the engine definitely looks as if work was performed. Now that I have cooled off and listened to explanation, I'm ok with it. It seems that while the truck was sitting in their yard waiting for the driveline parts and it was a slow day, the desiel tech pulled the truck in to actually test the injectors. He found high fuel prob and shop foreman said to go ahead and change them. Like someone said, better now then waiting for fuel in oil issues. Driveline is smooth, no damage to pinion bearing or trans yoke from bad drive shaft so I'm on the road and happy. Thanks for all the input, this is a great forum.

Seems like you do have a great dealer, although if it were me, I'd complain that they should have at least called you first. But then again, it didn't cost you anything so, oh well.

When I had my injectors done my invoice read "injectors now covered for 12000 miles or 12 months"
