Just traded in Powerstroke for 04' Duramax. Am confused on the external spin-on filter change intervals. According to the manual It says change @ 7500 miles and I do not see a mention of it again until the 25,000/50,000 fluid & filter change. Is this correct or should it be changed more often. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the DieselPlace and good luck with your Duramax.

Most are changing at the first 5ooo mark and I personally change at every 10k,cheap insurance. The Allison maintenance recommendation is 25k intervals after the initial change. The filter is available at your local Detroit Diesel Allison shop for around 7 bucks or vendors here.

What made you switch brands?

What is the reasoning behind changing it with every oil filter Mike? Just curious. I know my truck has about 13,500 on it now and I need to change it but just curious. Thanks

Had Chevys all my life, when I went to a diesel in 01' Chevy could not deliver yet, had to go with Powerstroke. Got back to Chevy fast as I could. Thanks for the reply

I hate it when Mac knows me so well.
I use the 5K marker because it is easy to remember and I have them in stock and it can't hurt and it can only help and I am OLD.

Ok well I was thinking there was some other reason behind it. Dealer told me to change at a different interval, but I guess I can change that too... Thanks

I'm with Mike on this, you got the drain bucket under it, the filters are cheap, done.

I have a question, when you do change it, how much trans fluid will need to be added.

If you fill the new filter with fluid you will be fine. Not a lot drains out when you replace them. I have been doing mine at oil changes, which is 7500 miles for me. It also relieves the tired brain cell of trying to remember when I did it last.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

Did mine last night.. If you drain the pan and pull the filter it will hold 2 gallons of fluid.
